Part 1: The Woman Beneath the Rain

“Sir, do you need a maid? I can do anything—my daughter is starving.” The woman stood outside my hotel under the awning, drenched in November rain, holding a sleeping child close to her chest.

I nearly passed her by.

Then she looked up.

Everything stopped.

“Lena?”

Her lips shook. A yellow bruise marked her cheek. Her hair had been cut unevenly, and the woman I once knew—graceful, composed—now looked like a shadow of herself.

“Daniel,” she whispered urgently. “Don’t react. Your mother has people watching.”

My daughter shifted in her arms.

My daughter.

She was only one year old… meaning Lena had been pregnant when she disappeared.

I led them inside, pretending nothing was wrong. Upstairs, I locked the penthouse and finally let the truth collapse over me.

Lena placed the baby in my arms.

“Her name is Grace.”

My mind spiraled—memories of a funeral, a burned car, and a fake death arranged by my mother.

Then Lena spoke.

“She kidnapped me. Your mother forged everything. When she found out I was pregnant, she kept me hidden.”

My phone rang.

Mother.

“Daniel, where are you? The dinner starts soon.”

“I’ll be there,” I said.

But everything had already changed.

Because I was no longer grieving.
