Part 2: The Midnight Arrest

Part 2: The Midnight Arrest

The boardroom glittered with crystal chandeliers, polished marble, and people who believed Evelyn Ashford could do no wrong.

She stood at the head of the table wearing a diamond necklace Daniel had bought her years before.

"There you are," she smiled warmly as Daniel entered. "I was beginning to think grief had finally broken your sense of responsibility."

Daniel smiled back.

"Not grief," he answered. "Truth."

The room fell strangely quiet.

"What do you mean?" one director asked.

Daniel placed a leather folder on the conference table.

"I'd like everyone to stay seated. Tonight's agenda has changed."

Evelyn's smile faded only slightly.

"Daniel, this isn't the place."

"It is exactly the place."

He pressed a button on the conference room remote.

The large presentation screen lit up.

Instead of quarterly financial reports, security footage appeared.

A lonely farmhouse.

Barbed-wire fencing.

Armed guards.

Time stamps spanning nearly two years.

The directors leaned forward in confusion.

"What is this?" someone whispered.

Daniel didn't answer.

Another video appeared.

Dr. Mercer entering the property.

Then leaving three hours later carrying medical equipment.

Then copies of bank transfers appeared.

Millions of dollars moving from Evelyn's personal foundation into shell companies.

Each transfer was linked to Mercer.

Then came the recording.

Evelyn's own voice.

"If she survives childbirth, move the baby somewhere else. Daniel must never know."

Silence crushed the room.

One director slowly removed his glasses.

"My God..."

Evelyn stood abruptly.

"These recordings are fabricated."

"They've already been authenticated," Daniel replied calmly.

The conference room doors opened.

Federal investigators walked inside.

Behind them came detectives from the Major Crimes Division.

Leading them was Special Agent Rebecca Collins.

"Evelyn Ashford?"

She nodded proudly.

"Yes."

"You're under arrest for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, obstruction of justice, fraud, witness tampering, falsifying evidence, and conspiracy to commit murder."

Gasps echoed around the room.

"You have no proof!" Evelyn shouted.

Another voice answered from the doorway.

"We do."

Every head turned.

Lena stepped inside.

Alive.

Holding little Grace.

The room erupted.

Several directors stood in disbelief.

One woman burst into tears.

Evelyn stumbled backward as though she'd seen a ghost.

"No..."

Lena looked directly into her eyes.

"You buried me while I was still breathing."

Evelyn's face drained of color.

"You should have stayed hidden," she hissed.

The detectives heard every word.

Those six words became the final piece of evidence prosecutors needed.

Cold steel handcuffs closed around Evelyn's wrists.

At exactly 11:57 p.m., she was escorted through the front entrance of Ashford Tower.

Hundreds of reporters had already gathered outside.

Camera flashes turned the night into daylight.

For the first time in her life, Evelyn Ashford couldn't control the story.

Daniel walked beside Lena as they quietly left through a private exit.

Grace slept peacefully between them.

But Lena still looked frightened.

Daniel noticed.

"It's over," he whispered.

She shook her head.

"No."

"There was another person."

Daniel stopped walking.

"What do you mean?"

Lena swallowed hard.

May you like

"Your father..."

"...he may still be alive."
