Chapter 8 - The Siege of 4th Street

Five minutes before Judge Vance was set to arrive, the lights inside the workshop flickered, sputtered, and died, plunging us into darkness.
Outside, the heavy rain was cut by the screeching of high-performance tires pulling into the gravel yard surrounding the shop.
"They found us," Claire whispered, pulling Lily behind the heavy oak desk in the corner.
"Stay down," I commanded.
Through the small, high-mounted reinforced glass transom above the door, I saw two black SUVs blocking the driveway. High-powered spotlights mounted on the roof racks snapped on, flooding the workshop interior with blinding white light through the cracks in the steel door.
A megaphone crackled to life outside.
"Arthur Mercer!" Grant Vale’s voice echoed over the storm, tight with rage and desperation. "You have five minutes to bring that drive out to the yard! If you don't, we drop explosive charges on the door frames! We burn this barn to the ground with all three of you inside!"
I didn't answer. I knelt beside the main junction box near the entry door.
Vale thought he was laying siege to a wooden barn. He didn't know that this workshop was originally built in 1912 as an armory holding vault. The walls were three-foot-thick reinforced brick; the steel door was anchored directly into two-ton concrete footings.
"Marcus!" I called out through the iron speaking grate built into the door center. "You're standing on top of a three-phase industrial transformer grid! If Vale detonates an explosive charge on that frame, it will trigger an arc-flash that will vaporize anyone within twenty feet!"
There was a sudden pause outside. I could hear hushed, frantic arguing over the sound of the rain.
"He's lying, Marcus!" Vale yelled. "Set the charges!"
"He doesn't lie about wiring, Grant!" Marcus's voice screamed back, shrill with panic. "I grew up with him! He built the security grid for the county mint! If he says it's rigged, it's rigged!"
"Step aside, you coward!" Vale barked.
Through the narrow slit, I saw Vale snatch a heavy tactical breaching shotgun from one of his hired men. He pushed Marcus out of the way and marched directly toward the steel door, his eyes wild with the madness of a billionaire whose life was collapsing around him.
"I built this city!" Vale screamed, racking the shotgun slide. "I own the land! I own the court! You are nothing but an old mechanic with grease on your hands!"
"A mechanic knows how things break, Mr. Vale," I said softly.
Vale raised the shotgun, aiming directly at the door lock cylinder.
Before he could pull the trigger, the dark street behind his vehicles exploded in a blinding flash of red and blue light.
A fleet of six unmarked black cruisers, flanked by state police tactical vans, roared into the yard, blocking off every escape route. Heavy tires tore up the wet gravel as armored officers spilled out, their rifles trained directly on Vale’s men.
"State Police! Drop your weapons! Drop your weapons now!" heavy loudspeakers boomed through the rain.
Vale froze, the shotgun lowered in his hands, his face illuminated by the swirling red lights of the law enforcement vehicles.
From the lead cruiser, an elderly man in a long dark trench coat stepped out, holding a thick leather folder. Judge Thomas Vance walked slowly into the center of the yard, completely unfazed by the armed men around him.
"Grant Vale," Vance's voice echoed through the cold night, smooth as iron and cold as winter. "By authority of the State Supreme Court and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, I have issued emergency arrest warrants for treason, grand larceny, attempted murder, and conspiracy."
Marcus instantly dropped to his knees, throwing his hands in the air. "I surrender! I'll testify! I'll tell you everything! It was all Vale!"
May you like
Vale looked around frantically, realizing in one terrible second that his money, his connections, and his empire had evaporated into the cold rain. He dropped the shotgun to the wet gravel with a hollow clack.
I pulled the heavy internal latch, swung the steel door open, and walked out into the night, holding Claire's hand while Lily rode safely on my shoulder.
