Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm in Lincoln Park

Inside the sprawling, fortress-like limestone mansion in Lincoln Park, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Vincent Caruso paced across the imported Italian marble flooring of his private study, a crystal tumbler of scotch half-sloshed against the rim as his hand shook with residual fury.

His cell phone buzzed violently on the mahogany desk.

Vincent snatched it up, pressing answer without checking the caller ID. “Speak.”

“Boss,” came the nervous, gravelly voice of Dante, Vincent’s primary enforcer and head of security. “We checked the hospitals. She hasn’t left St. Catherine’s yet, but… she’s had visitors. A lawyer named Marcus Vance went into her suite about an hour ago. He didn’t come out through the main lobby; security cameras show he left through the private service elevator with a stack of documents.”

Vincent’s blood ran cold, instantly turning to boiling lava. Marcus Vance. The name was legendary in Chicago legal circles—a bulldog attorney notorious for tearing apart prenuptial agreements, dismantling corporate empires during bitter divorces, and representing clients who usually needed federal protection.

“Vance?” Vincent roared, slamming his fist down onto the desk, cracking the crystal tumbler and sending amber liquid spilling across the polished wood. “What the hell is Vance doing involved with my wife?”

“Word on the street is he’s taking her on pro bono, or under a special retainer,” Dante stammered over the line. “Boss, that’s not all. We checked the security logs for the NICU. Naomi had her hospital account locked down. She filed an official trespass notice with St. Catherine’s security. Your name has been added to the restricted access list. You can’t get to the babies without a court order.”

The phone almost slipped from Vincent’s grip.

“Restricted access?” Vincent’s voice dropped into a dangerous, deadly register. “To my own children? She cannot do that. I am their father! I hold the birth certificates, I hold the leverage, I hold the entire city in the palm of my hand!”

“Boss… Vance isn't just any lawyer,” Dante cautioned carefully. “He’s tied into federal oversight committees. If you try to pull a syndicate move and snatch the kids or pressure the hospital, the feds will use it as an excuse to crack open our shipping terminals downtown. You can’t play heavy-handed with a custody battle involving a newborn NICU case. The optics would destroy our legitimacy.”

Vincent cut the connection, tossing the phone across the room where it shattered against a bookshelf.

He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the manicured gardens, his chest heaving. For years, Vincent had operated under the arrogant assumption that Naomi was a permanent fixture in his life—a quiet, compliant ornament who would endure any humiliation because she had nowhere else to go. He had taken her completely for granted, believing her background as a foster child meant she lacked the teeth, the network, or the spine to ever bite back.

He had miscalculated. Monumentally.

Behind him, the soft click of the study door opening broke his reverie.

Bianca Moretti stood in the doorway, wrapped in a silk designer bathrobe, her face pale, leaning slightly against the doorframe for support. The "medical crisis" that had kept Vincent by her side while his wife labored alone had been real enough—a sudden drop in blood pressure caused by an adverse reaction to a minor cosmetic procedure she had undergone to appease one of Vincent’s business associates. But looking at her now, Vincent didn’t feel the protective surge of concern that had gripped him the night before.

He felt only a cold, bitter resentment.

“Vincent,” Bianca whispered, her voice trembling slightly. “I heard you yelling. Is… is everything alright? Is it about Naomi?”

Vincent turned slowly, his slate-grey eyes locking onto Bianca with a chilling intensity that made her step back involuntarily.

“Pack your things, Bianca,” Vincent said, his voice flat, devoid of any warmth or mercy.

Bianca blinked, stunned. “What? What do you mean? Where would I go? My recovery—”

“I don’t care about your recovery,” Vincent interrupted, his voice cutting through the air like a razor. “You cost me my family. You cost me my leverage. Get out of my house before I have Dante throw you out into the street.”

May you like

Bianca stared at him, her mouth opening in shock, realizing too late that the man she had tried to latch onto as a lifeline was a monster who discarded people the second they stopped serving his ambitions.

Vincent didn't watch her leave. He walked back to his desk, picked up the landline, and dialed a number he hadn’t used in years. It was time to call in every favor, every debt, and every dirty secret he held in Chicago. If Naomi wanted a war, he would show her an empire burning to the ground to get her back.
