Part 2 The Secret Elena Was Dying to Protect

Three hours after Detective Sarah Chen asked about Dante's relationship with Elena Vasquez, the answer arrived from the most unexpected place.

The ICU.

At 4:48 a.m., Elena's heart rate suddenly spiked.

Dr. Richardson rushed into the room.

Dante followed.

Elena remained unconscious, but her lips moved weakly beneath the oxygen mask.

The nurse leaned closer.

"What is she saying?"

Everyone fell silent.

Elena whispered only three words.

"Locker... seventy-two..."

Then again.

"Locker... seventy-two..."

And then:

"Protect the children..."

Dr. Richardson frowned.

"What does that mean?"

But Dante had already turned toward Marco.

"Find out."

Within thirty minutes, Marco returned.

"There is a locker seventy-two at Penn Station."

Dante immediately dispatched two trusted men.

By sunrise, they returned carrying a small metal lockbox.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Photographs.

Bank records.

Medical reports.

And one flash drive.

Detective Chen arrived just as Dante was reading the first page.

"What is that?"

Dante handed it to her.

The detective's face changed color.

"Oh my God."

The documents exposed a massive criminal operation.

Children with rare illnesses had been secretly denied treatment through a network of corrupt hospital administrators and pharmaceutical executives.

Life-saving medications were being diverted and sold overseas for millions of dollars.

Several children had died waiting for drugs that had already been paid for.

Elena had discovered everything.

For nearly a year, she had quietly collected evidence.

The flash drive contained names, transactions, recordings, and enough proof to destroy some of the most powerful people in New York.

"She was building a case," Chen whispered.

"Against who?" Reeves asked.

Chen stared at the list.

"Everyone."

The room went silent.

Then Dante noticed something.

One name.

Vincent Barone.

A businessman.

A philanthropist.

And secretly one of Dante's oldest enemies.

The man in the suit from the parking-lot footage.

The man who had been shot protecting Elena.

Suddenly everything made sense.

Barone hadn't come to kill her.

He had come to help her.

Someone else had arrived first.

Someone higher up.

Someone desperate.

Dante's phone rang.

Tony's voice exploded through the speaker.

"We found the shooters."

"Where?"

"A warehouse in Brooklyn."

Dante's eyes hardened.

"Keep them alive."

By nightfall, the shooters were in custody.

Under interrogation, they confessed.

The order hadn't come from a street gang.

It had come from executives terrified that Elena would expose them.

She had been scheduled to meet federal investigators the next morning.

The attack was meant to silence her forever.

Instead, she had survived.

And now the entire conspiracy was collapsing.

For the first time in years, Dante watched police cars and FBI agents storm buildings across Manhattan.

Not because of him.

Because of Elena.

The woman lying unconscious upstairs had accomplished something no criminal empire ever could.

She had brought powerful people to justice.

Yet none of it mattered if she didn't wake up.

For seven days, she remained unconscious.

And every day, Dante sat beside her bed.

Every day.

No meetings.

No clubs.

No business.

Just a chair.

And hope.

Then, on the eighth morning, her fingers moved.

Dante looked up.

Elena's eyes slowly opened.

And the first thing she saw was him.

"Dante?"

His voice broke.

"I'm here."

May you like

She smiled faintly.

"I knew you'd come."
