PART 7 – THE SECRET THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Rebecca Sinclair did not frighten easily.
She had spent years manipulating powerful businessmen, politicians, and lawyers.
She knew how to stay calm.
She knew how to stay in control.
But the six words she had just heard over the phone echoed in her mind.
"She isn't who everyone believes."
Rebecca tightened her grip on the phone.
"What do you mean?"
On the other end, the private investigator lowered his voice.
"We found something while reviewing the hospital records from ten years ago."
"What?"
"There was a fire."
Rebecca frowned.
"I know about the fire."
"No."
"You know about the fire."
"You don't know what disappeared because of it."
Ten years earlier...
The maternity ward of St. Anne's Hospital had been thrown into chaos when an electrical fire broke out in the records department.
Smoke filled the hallways.
Doctors rushed newborns to safety.
Nurses carried paper files into the parking lot before the flames reached them.
Many records were saved.
Some were not.
Among the missing documents...
Birth certificates.
Blood test reports.
DNA registration forms.
Everything related to several babies born during those two days had vanished forever.
Present Day...
Daniel's chief investigator, Thomas Reed, arrived at the Hayes Estate before sunrise.
His face was unusually serious.
Daniel met him in the library.
"You found something."
Thomas nodded.
"I think Rebecca isn't trying to take Sophia."
Daniel stared at him.
"Then what does she want?"
Thomas laid several files across the table.
"I believe she's looking for someone else."
Daniel frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Thomas slid forward a faded hospital report.
"This is all that survived the fire."
Daniel picked it up.
Only fragments remained.
Several names.
Incomplete identification numbers.
Nurses' handwritten notes.
One sentence caught his attention.
"Two newborn girls temporarily transferred during emergency evacuation."
Daniel looked up.
"Transferred where?"
"We don't know."
"The rest of the page burned."
At breakfast...
Sophia noticed Daniel barely touched his food.
She pushed her bowl of oatmeal toward him.
"You can have mine."
Daniel smiled.
"Why?"
"You forget breakfast when you're worried."
Maria watched them quietly.
Even in difficult moments...
Sophia always noticed who needed kindness most.
Meanwhile...
Michael Carter sat alone in his apartment.
His lawyer had just left.
"The hearing isn't going well," the attorney admitted.
"The judge believes Sophia already has emotional stability."
Michael sighed.
"I told you."
"I never wanted to hurt her."
The lawyer packed his briefcase.
"You still have options."
Michael shook his head.
"No."
"If winning means making her cry..."
"I've already lost."
As soon as the lawyer left...
Another knock came at the door.
Rebecca walked in.
She did not smile.
"You've become weak."
Michael stood.
"I'm becoming honest."
Rebecca laughed coldly.
"You think honesty changes anything?"
"It changes everything."
Rebecca stepped closer.
"If you withdraw now..."
"I'll make sure you lose everything."
Michael met her eyes.
"You can't threaten someone who already lost everything once."
Rebecca's expression darkened.
"You have no idea who you're dealing with."
Michael answered quietly,
"No."
"I finally know exactly who I'm dealing with."
That afternoon...
Thomas received a phone call.
He immediately rushed back to the estate.
"I found the retired head nurse."
Daniel stood.
"Is she willing to talk?"
Thomas nodded.
"But only in person."
The nursing home was peaceful.
Birds sang outside.
The elderly woman sat near a window knitting a small blue blanket.
Her name was Eleanor Brooks.
She had delivered thousands of babies.
When Daniel introduced himself...
Recognition filled her eyes.
"I remember that little girl."
Daniel leaned forward.
"Sophia?"
Eleanor smiled.
"She was the quietest baby in the nursery."
Maria's eyes filled with tears.
"You remember us?"
"I remember every mother who cried alone."
Maria lowered her head.
Eleanor gently took her hand.
"You were very brave."
Daniel carefully asked,
"Mrs. Brooks..."
"Do you remember the hospital fire?"
The knitting needles stopped moving.
Her smile disappeared.
"I've tried to forget it."
"What happened?"
She looked around the room to ensure no one else could hear.
"We lost track of two babies."
Maria gasped.
"What?"
"It lasted less than fifteen minutes."
"But for fifteen minutes..."
"No one knew which child belonged to which mother."
Silence.
Daniel felt his pulse racing.
"Were they returned correctly?"
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"I prayed they were."
"But..."
She opened a small wooden box beside her chair.
Inside lay an old hospital identification bracelet.
The ink had almost faded.
Only one word remained legible.
HAYES
Daniel froze.
Maria stared at the bracelet.
Thomas slowly whispered,
"My God..."
Back at Rebecca's penthouse...
The investigator entered carrying another envelope.
"I found the adoption registry."
Rebecca opened it quickly.
Her eyes scanned the pages.
Then...
She smiled.
A slow...
Dangerous smile.
"So that's why."
The investigator looked confused.
"What?"
Rebecca carefully closed the file.
"If Daniel learns the truth..."
"He'll protect her with everything he has."
She looked out across the city lights.
"So we make sure..."
"...he never learns."
She reached for her phone.
"Prepare the next step."
The investigator hesitated.
"What next step?"
Rebecca answered without emotion.
"Bring me the child."
At the Hayes Estate...
Sophia sat in her bedroom finishing homework.
Outside...
A black van parked quietly across the street.
Two men remained inside.
Watching.
Waiting.
One of them lifted a pair of binoculars.
"Target confirmed."
The second man checked his watch.
"Tomorrow."
"No mistakes."
Inside the mansion...
Sophia looked out her bedroom window.
For a brief second...
She thought she saw someone watching the house.
When she looked again...
The van was gone.
She shrugged and closed the curtains.
May you like
Completely unaware...
That she had just escaped the first move in Rebecca Sinclair's most dangerous plan yet.
