Chapter 10 - A Lifetime of Sweet Beginnings

Roman led Clara away from the bustling festival crowd down toward Boston Harbor. The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and rose. The harbor waters shimmered under the fading light, reflecting the twinkling lights of the city skyline.

They walked hand in hand along the historic brick promenade, the cool evening breeze carrying the fresh scent of the ocean.

"Remember the first day I walked into your bakery?" Roman asked softly, glancing down at her with a tender smile.

"How could I forget?" Clara replied, playfully nudging his shoulder with hers. "You wore a very expensive black overcoat and looked like you were auditioning for a mob movie. And then I threw flour all over you."

"Best thing that ever happened to me," Roman admitted without a trace of irony. "I spent my whole life surrounded by darkness, ledgers of fear, and people who only looked at me with terror. And then this fierce baker with flour on her nose told me to get out of her kitchen."

Clara laughed, her chest swelling with a deep, abiding warmth. She stopped walking and turned to face him, the harbor waves lapping gently against the stone wall behind them.

Roman stopped too. He reached inside his jacket pocket, but this time, he didn't pull out a handkerchief, a pocketknife, or a legal document.

He pulled out a small, elegant velvet box.

Clara’s breath hitched. Time seemed to slow down, echoing that very first morning in the bakery—only this time, there was no fear, no danger, and no shadow hanging over them. Just the open sky, the sparkling harbor, and the man who had completely changed her world.

Roman opened the box. Inside sat a stunning diamond ring, simple yet elegant, catching the evening light like morning dew.

"Clara Evans," Roman said, his voice steady, earnest, and filled with a profound devotion that reached straight to her soul. "I spent years dismantling a legacy I never asked for. But you gave me a reason to build something real. Will you marry me? And more importantly... will you let me eat your sourdough for the rest of my life?"

Tears spilled over Clara's eyelashes, but her smile was radiant and absolute.

"Yes," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "Yes, Roman. A thousand times yes."

Roman slid the ring onto her finger, pulled her into his arms, and kissed her deeply as the city lights flickered to life around them. The past was buried where it belonged, the ghosts were finally laid to rest, and ahead of them lay a future as warm, sweet, and enduring as the morning bread at Evans Bakery.
