Part 4: The Tremors of the Past

The sound of Marcus’s voice sent an involuntary shiver through my veins, bringing with it a flood of bitter memories—the cold apartment, the empty cupboards, and the cruel indifference of his final departure.

“Marcus?” I said, my voice dropping into a hard, defensive tone. “Why are you calling me?”

Across the table, Luke’s posture shifted instantly. His jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing as he watched my expression change from peaceful vulnerability to absolute alertness.

“I’ve been looking for you for weeks,” Marcus said, his voice carrying a nervous, erratic energy. “Your old phone was disconnected, and the landlord at your old place said you vanished. I had to pay a private locator to find this number.”

“Why do you care?” I demanded, walking away from the table toward the living room window, trying to keep my voice down so I wouldn’t wake Lily. “You made it very clear that you didn't want anything to do with us. You told me never to call you when things got hard.”

“Look, things have changed,” Marcus said, attempting to sound smooth, though the desperation bled through the edges of his words. “My family… my father’s real estate business is going public next month. The underwriters are doing background checks, looking into everything. The media is sniffing around. If it gets out that I have a daughter living in poverty or state care on the South Side, it’ll ruin the valuation. It looks terrible for the family brand.”

I let out a harsh, incredulous laugh. “The family brand? That’s why you’re calling? Because we’re a liability to your stock portfolio?”

“I’m offering you a way out, Khloe,” Marcus snapped, his old, arrogant temper flaring up. “I’m willing to set up a trust fund for Lily. A significant amount of money. But it comes with conditions. You sign a non-disclosure agreement, you agree to absolute confidentiality, and you sign over full legal custody to me, with a structured visitation schedule that I control. We keep it quiet, we keep it clean, and you get taken care of. It’s a win-win.”

My grip on the phone was so tight my knuckles turned white. “You want me to sell my daughter’s legal rights to protect your inheritance?”

“Don’t be dramatic,” Marcus sneered. “What are your options, Khloe? Last I checked, you were scraping by on a receptionist’s salary and facing eviction. You can’t afford a legal battle. If you don’t take this deal, I’ll hire the best family lawyers in Illinois and take her from you anyway, citing financial instability and neglect. Don't play hero. You don’t have the resources to fight me.”

Before I could respond, a firm, steady hand gently took the phone from my trembling fingers.

I looked up to see Luke standing beside me. His expression was completely calm, but his eyes were like flint—cold, hard, and utterly dangerous. He pressed the speakerphone button, holding the device between us.

“Marcus,” Luke said, his voice low, resonant, and dripping with an authority that instantly silenced the man on the other end.

“Who the hell is this?” Marcus demanded, caught off guard.

“My name is Luke Mitchell, CEO of the Mitchell Family Development Group,” Luke stated calmly. “And I suggest you change your tone when speaking to my Program Coordinator.”

There was a long, stunned silence on the line. Marcus’s family business was wealthy, but the Mitchell Group was an institutional titan in Chicago real estate. Marcus knew exactly who Luke was.

“Mitchell?” Marcus stammered, his arrogance faltering. “What does this have to do with you? This is a private family matter.”

“It became my matter when you threatened a member of my staff and a resident of my foundation’s housing program,” Luke replied, his voice carrying the weight of an absolute promise. “Let me make a few things very clear to you, Marcus. Khloe does not live in poverty. She is gainfully employed, she resides in a highly secure luxury development on the North Side, and her daughter is enrolled in an elite private daycare academy. There is no judge in the state of Illinois who would grant a custody transfer based on financial instability.”

Luke stepped closer to me, his presence an unyielding wall of security. “Furthermore, if you or your family's lawyers attempt to file a single motion against Khloe, I will personally fund her legal defense with the top family law firm in the country. We will counter-sue for seven years of back child support, request a full forensic audit of your father’s corporate holdings prior to your public offering, and ensure that every media outlet covering your IPO knows exactly how you abandoned your pregnant partner to the winter streets. Do I make myself clear?”

On the other end of the line, Marcus’s breath came in short, panicked gasps. The threat of a corporate audit and a public relations nightmare on the eve of an IPO was a death sentence for his family’s ambitions.

“You’re bluffing,” Marcus whispered, though his voice lacked any real conviction.

“Try me,” Luke said softly. “File the paperwork. See what happens to your family brand by Monday morning. Do not call this number again.”

Luke hit the end-call button, cutting off the connection completely. He set the phone down on the counter and turned to me, his chest rising and falling with a heavy breath.

I stood there, completely stunned, the echo of his protective fury ringing in my ears. The terror that had gripped me just moments ago evaporated, replaced by an overwhelming sense of profound awe and relief.

“Luke…” I whispered, my voice breaking.

“I’m sorry,” he said quickly, his eyes softening as he looked at me, suddenly worried he had overstepped. “I shouldn’t have taken the phone. I just couldn’t sit by and let him threaten you like that. I won't let him touch your life, Khloe. I swear it.”

I didn’t answer with words. I couldn’t. Instead, I stepped forward and threw my arms around his neck, burying my face into his shoulder.

Luke froze for a fraction of a second, surprised by the sudden movement, before his arms wrapped tightly around my waist, pulling me flat against his chest. He held me with a desperate, fierce intensity, as if he were trying to weld our broken pieces back together.

“Thank you,” I sobbed into his jacket, the last remnants of my fear and isolation melting away in his warmth. “Thank you for fighting for us.”

May you like

“Always, Khloe,” he murmured into my hair, his lips pressing gently against my crown. “For the rest of my life, I’m fighting for you.”

We stayed like that for a long time, holding onto each other in the quiet apartment while the snow continued to fall outside, no longer a threat, but merely a beautiful backdrop to a life that had finally found its anchor.
