Chapter 5 - Safehouse

"We're moving. Now," Dominic ordered without a second of hesitation.

"What about the café? My house?" Clara panicked, her mind racing to the children upstairs.

"Forget the coffee shop. Gear up only what you can carry in five minutes," Dominic said, taking charge with terrifying efficiency. He turned to Mateo. "Get the armored Suburban around back. Frank, clear the alley. If anyone approaches within fifty feet, shoot to disable."

Within three minutes, Clara had packed a single duffel bag with warm clothes, diapers, and the kids' favorite stuffed animals. She hurried down the back stairs with Noah and Lily, who were wide-eyed and silent, sensing the intense energy of the adults around them.

"Mommy, are we going on an adventure?" Lily asked, clutching a ragged teddy bear to her chest.

"Yes, baby," Clara lied smoothly, kissing the top of her daughter's head. "A little road trip with Dominic."

Dominic picked up Noah with one arm and guided Clara and Lily out the rear fire escape with his free hand. Rain slammed against the concrete alleyway as they scrambled into the reinforced rear seat of the black Suburban. The doors slammed shut with a heavy, vacuum-sealed thud, cutting off the sound of the storm outside.

"Where are we going?" Clara asked, her breath coming in ragged gasps as the heavy SUV surged forward, its engine roaring down the narrow coastal road.

"I have a safehouse twelve miles north, near the cliffs of Cape Elizabeth," Dominic said, looking out the tinted rear window. "It’s hidden, fully fortified, and off any public map. We hold up there until my reinforcements arrive from Boston."

"Dominic, they know we're in town!" Clara cried out, her hands shaking as she pulled both kids close to her sides. "What if they follow us?"

"They won't," Dominic said coldly.

Right on cue, two miles down the winding coastal highway, a dark sedan pulled out from a side road, accelerating rapidly to catch up to the Suburban.

"Tail at six o'clock," Frank reported from the driver's seat, his face calm and professional. "One vehicle. Four occupants."

Noah peeked over the seat. "Is that a race car?"

"Stay down, buddy," Dominic said gently, reaching back to push Noah’s head down safely against Clara’s lap. "Let daddy handle this."

Daddy.

The word hung in the air, heavy and electric. Clara looked at Dominic, her heart hammering against her chest. Despite the immediate danger, seeing Dominic take charge—seeing the fierce, protective instinct over his children—made a strange warmth blossom in her chest.

"Frank, execute protocol Bravo," Dominic ordered sharply.

"Understood, sir."

Frank slammed on the brakes for a split second, causing the trailing sedan to swerve violently to avoid a rear-end collision. As the sedan pulled alongside them on the narrow road, Mateo rolled down his window just two inches, pointed a specialized pneumatic launcher, and fired a heavy steel pulse tracker onto the sedan's front tire.

Simultaneously, Frank veered sharp right onto a hidden, unpaved logging road obscured by thick pine trees. The trailing sedan, unable to make the sudden turn on the wet asphalt, skidded out of control, slamming hard into the wooden guardrail and spinning out into the ditch.

"Clear," Mateo reported calmly, rolling up his window.

Dominic didn't even turn his head to look back. He kept his arm stretched across Clara and the kids, holding them secure against the sway of the vehicle.

Twenty minutes later, the logging road opened up to a massive, secluded iron gate nestled deep within a pine forest overlooking the roaring Atlantic Ocean. Beyond the gate stood a modern, low-profile mansion built of concrete, slate, and bulletproof glass.

"Welcome to the sanctuary," Dominic said as the iron gates closed automatically behind them.

Clara looked out at the sweeping views of the stormy sea, then at Dominic. "You built this... for us?"

Dominic looked into her eyes, his expression utterly vulnerable. "I built this four years ago, Clara. When I still hoped I would find you alive. Every room was designed for you. Every window was placed so you could see the ocean."

May you like

Clara swallowed hard, tears rising to her eyes once more. "Dominic..."

"Come inside," he whispered softly. "You're safe now. I promise you."
