Part 2: The Devil Came for His Daughter

The engines didn't simply approach.

They surrounded the warehouse.

One.

Three.

Seven.

At least a dozen black SUVs rolled across the cracked pavement outside, their headlights flooding the broken windows with harsh white light.

Maya instinctively pulled the little girl closer.

The child woke with a frightened gasp.

Then she heard the engines.

Every bit of color drained from her tiny face.

"No..." she whispered.

It was the first word Maya had heard her speak.

"They found me."

Before Maya could ask who "they" were, the warehouse door exploded open with a deafening crash.

Heavy boots thundered across the concrete.

Men poured inside.

Not police.

Not security.

Every one of them wore black tactical gear.

Body armor.

Earpieces.

Military rifles.

Their movements were silent and frighteningly disciplined.

Within seconds, red laser sights swept across the room.

One settled directly on Maya's chest.

"Hands where we can see them!"

Maya slowly lifted both hands.

The little girl buried her face against Maya's shoulder, trembling so violently that Maya could feel every shake.

"It's okay," Maya whispered.

One of the armed men stepped closer.

His expression changed the instant he saw the child.

"Boss..."

His voice cracked.

"We found Miss Sofia."

The warehouse became perfectly silent.

Every armed man lowered his weapon at once.

Then another pair of footsteps echoed through the building.

Slow.

Measured.

Terrifying.

A man emerged from the shadows.

He was perhaps forty.

Tall.

Impeccably dressed in a charcoal overcoat despite the abandoned warehouse.

His face carried the calm confidence of someone who had never needed to raise his voice to be obeyed.

A thin scar crossed one eyebrow.

His eyes—

Cold enough to freeze the room.

Everyone stepped aside.

No one dared speak.

The little girl finally looked up.

"Daddy..."

The word came out as a broken sob.

The man stopped walking.

For a heartbeat, the terrifying figure disappeared.

Only a father remained.

"Sofia."

He crossed the distance in seconds and knelt beside her.

His hands shook as he touched her burning forehead.

"My God..."

His voice broke.

"You have a fever."

Sofia clung to Maya instead of him.

The man noticed.

So did everyone else.

He slowly looked toward Maya.

His eyes returned to ice.

"What happened?"

No one answered.

One guard swallowed hard.

"We believe she escaped the kidnapping yesterday evening."

Another continued.

"The kidnappers abandoned this warehouse after the police pressure increased."

"They left her here?"

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

Nobody spoke.

The man nodded once.

"Find them."

"Alive."

Every soldier immediately disappeared.

Maya had no idea who this man was.

But she knew one thing.

Whoever those kidnappers were...

she suddenly felt sorry for them.

The little girl tugged on Maya's sleeve.

"Don't leave."

Her voice was barely audible.

The father watched the scene with quiet disbelief.

Sofia had refused food, doctors, and even him since she'd been rescued.

Yet she would not let go of this exhausted college student.

Finally, the man extended his hand.

"I'm Alessandro Moretti."

Maya stared.

Her heart stopped.

Everyone in the city knew that name.

The newspapers called him many things.

Business tycoon.

Millionaire.

Philanthropist.

But whispers told another story.

The most feared mafia boss in the city.

Maya suddenly realized exactly whose daughter she had spent the night protecting.

May you like

She had never felt smaller.

Or more trapped.
