Chapter 3 - The Fractured Memory

The room dissolved into controlled chaos. Medical personnel flooded Room 312, light bars flickered, and the sterile smell of antiseptic clashed with the raw, petrichor aroma of the wet earth still clinging to the sheets. Daniel was gently pushed back by the medical team as they began performing neurological reflex checks, flashing penlights into Emily’s eyes, and monitoring the baby’s fetal heart rate.

Emily did not fully wake up that afternoon. Instead, she entered a state of low-level awareness—a murky twilight zone between the deep void of her coma and the harsh reality of consciousness. Her eyes would open for a few seconds at a time, glassy and unfocused, searching the ceiling before rolling back as exhaustion reclaimed her.

Dr. Harrison stood outside the room an hour later, holding a stack of freshly printed neurological scans. Daniel stood opposite him, clutching a paper cup of cold coffee he had no intention of drinking.

"It is, medically speaking, extraordinary," Dr. Harrison admitted, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "The sudden shift in her cortical activity is unprecedented after eight months of static coma. However, Daniel, I need you to brace yourself."

"Brace myself for what? She spoke my name, Doc. She’s coming back!" Daniel’s voice trembled with a volatile mixture of joy and terror.

"She is coming back, yes, but we don't know what version of her is returning," Dr. Harrison said gently. "Traumatic brain injury coupled with prolonged lack of oxygen can leave severe cognitive scars. Furthermore, her body has been carrying a pregnancy while completely immobile. The physical stress on her organs as her brain attempts to reboot could trigger premature labor."

"And the baby?" Daniel asked, his heart sinking.

"The baby is surprisingly resilient. Heartbeat is strong at 145 beats per minute," Dr. Harrison replied with a faint, reassuring smile. "But Emily’s brain is currently like a corrupted hard drive trying to recover lost files. She may not remember the accident. She may not remember the pregnancy. She might not even remember... you."

Those words hit Daniel harder than any physical blow. She might not remember you.

That night, the hospital granted Daniel permission to stay in the room continuously. The soil Lily had brought had been carefully removed and placed into a small ziplock bag by Daniel, who couldn't bring himself to throw it away. He kept it on the bedside table, right next to their framed wedding photograph from four years ago in the hill country.

At 2:00 AM, the rain outside pounded rhythmically against the glass windows of the third floor. The room was bathed in the dim blue hue of the vital monitors.

A raspy, quiet gasp cut through the silence.

Daniel bolted upright from his armchair. "Emily?"

Her eyes were open. Fully open this time. They were no longer glossy, but wide with a terrifying, primal panic. She was breathing rapidly, her chest heaving against the restraints that had been lightly placed on her wrists to prevent her from pulling out her IV lines.

"Emily, hey, hey, it's okay. You're safe," Daniel whispered, rushing to her side and grasping her left hand. "You're in the hospital. You're safe."

Emily pulled her hand back violently, her eyes darting around the sterile room in sheer terror. She looked at Daniel, but there was no recognition in her gaze—only the desperate instinct of a cornered animal.

"Who..." she choked out, her voice raspy and raw from months of disuse through a breathing tube. "Who... are you?"

Daniel felt the air get sucked out of his lungs. "It's me, Em. It's Daniel. Your husband."

She shook her head weakly, tears welling up in her eyes and spilling down her hollow cheeks. "No... no... where is... where am I? Why can't I move my legs?"

Then, her hand brushed against the enormous bulge of her belly beneath the blanket. She froze. Her eyes dropped to her body, taking in the massive, rounded mass of her pregnant stomach.

A sharp scream of terror tore from her throat.

"What is this?!" she cried, hyperventilating as panic took absolute control over her waking mind. "What did you do to me?! What is inside me?!"
