Part 2: The Man Who Never Raised His Voice

Matteo walked forward.

No one dared stop him.

The ballroom seemed to shrink around him as he crossed the polished marble floor. The laughter died instantly. Even Ethan's smug smile faltered.

Matteo knelt beside Anna.

His expensive suit brushed against the champagne-soaked floor, but he didn't seem to notice.

"Anna."

His voice was soft.

She burst into tears.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I ruined everything."

Matteo looked at the uneven lock of hair hanging beside her face.

Then he saw the chunk lying on the floor.

Something changed behind his eyes.

Not rage.

Something colder.

Much colder.

He gently removed the napkins from her trembling hands.

"You didn't ruin anything."

Anna shook her head.

"He said I embarrassed everyone."

Matteo carefully tucked her damaged hair behind her ear.

"The only people embarrassing themselves are standing."

The room went silent.

Matteo slowly rose to his feet.

Now he faced Ethan.

For the first time all evening, Ethan looked uncertain.

"Who are you?" Ethan scoffed.

Matteo stared at him.

Then he turned toward the stage.

"Would someone please stop recording and call security?"

Immediately.

Three security guards moved.

Not toward Anna.

Toward Ethan.

The color drained from Ethan's face.

"Wait a second. You can't tell me what to do."

Matteo finally spoke.

"I can."

One of Ethan's friends swallowed nervously.

Recognition flashed across his face.

"Oh God..."

Another guest whispered:

"That's him."

"What?"

"That's Matteo Rossi."

The whispers spread rapidly.

The owner.

The founder.

The billionaire investor whose company had purchased the entire hotel chain six months earlier.

The man hosting the charity gala.

The man whose name was on every invitation.

Ethan's confidence shattered.

"You... you're Matteo Rossi?"

Matteo didn't answer.

His attention remained fixed on the scissors still hanging from Ethan's fingers.

"You assaulted my wife."

The words landed like stones.

Wife.

The entire room gasped.

Several guests lowered their eyes in shame.

The staff looked stunned.

Anna had worked at the hotel for three years.

Nobody knew she was married to Matteo.

Because she had asked him never to tell anyone.

She wanted to earn respect on her own.

And tonight she had learned exactly how some people treated those they believed had no power.

Matteo took one step closer.

"You humiliated her."

Another step.

"You grabbed her."

Another.

"And then you cut her hair."

Ethan's hands began to shake.

"It was a joke."

"No."

Matteo's voice remained calm.

"It was a crime."

Within seconds, security surrounded Ethan.

For the first time all night, the cameras pointed somewhere else.

At him.

May you like

Not Anna.

And suddenly Ethan understood exactly how fear felt.
