Chapter 9 - A House Filled with Music

Two years passed.

Blackwood Manor was no longer the cold, silent fortress it had once been. The sprawling grounds were now filled with life, laughter, and the gentle sound of music.

Grace was now ten years old. She had re-enrolled in school, where she excelled in art and literature, and had formed a close circle of friends who frequently came over for sleepovers and playdates. Her bedroom was still decorated with origami creations, but now they were accompanied by painted canvases, school trophies, and framed photographs of her family.

Harrison had restructured his role at Crestline Logistics, stepping down as Chief Executive Officer to take on an executive chairman position. He reduced his travel schedule significantly, prioritizing dinner with his family every night and attending every single one of Grace's school plays and soccer games.

And Clare had completed her degree in Child Psychology, using her education and personal experience to open a non-profit community center in the city—funded jointly by Harrison and her—dedicated to helping grieving children and low-income families navigate loss through art and expression therapy.

One evening, during a crisp winter snowfall, the grand living room of Blackwood Manor was decorated with warm golden lights and a massive Christmas tree.

Harrison stood near the grand piano, holding two glasses of sparkling wine. He was wearing a dark velvet suit, looking relaxed and happier than he had ever been in his life.

At the piano sat Grace, her fingers gliding gracefully across the keys as she played a soft holiday melody. Sitting beside her on the piano bench was Clare, gently turning the sheet music for her and singing along in a sweet, low voice.

Harrison watched the two of them with a deep, radiant contentment.

When the song ended, Grace bowed playfully, making Clare laugh.

"That was perfect, Grace," Harrison cheered, stepping forward and handing a glass to Clare. "You’ve officially mastered that piece."

"Clare helped me with the difficult chords," Grace said proudly, jumping off the piano bench. "I’m going to go fetch the dessert trays from the kitchen!"

As Grace skipped happily off toward the kitchen, Harrison walked over to Clare, standing by the piano.

"She’s glowing," Harrison murmured, watching Grace run down the hallway.

"She’s happy, Harrison," Clare said, setting her glass down on the piano. "She's whole."

Harrison turned to Clare, taking both of her hands in his. He looked deep into her eyes—eyes that had brought warmth, truth, and love into his life when he had been hopelessly lost in darkness.

"Clare," Harrison said quietly, his voice filled with deep affection. "Three years ago, you walked into a restaurant and folded a little paper bird for a mute child who had given up on the world. You gave my daughter her voice back. And over the last three years, you gave me a reason to love life again."

Clare’s heart beat faster as she saw Harrison reach into his jacket pocket.

He pulled out a small, elegantly folded origami box made of velvet-textured crimson paper.

Harrison opened the paper box. Inside sat a breathtaking diamond ring, glowing softly in the warm fireplace light.

"Harrison..." Clare whispered, her breath catching in her throat.

Harrison knelt on one knee in front of the piano.

"Clare Donovan, you brought light back into this home and healed our hearts. I love you with everything I have. Will you marry me, and make this family complete forever?"

Clare felt tears of pure joy welling up in her eyes. Before she could even answer, Grace came running back into the living room, holding a tray of holiday cookies.

Grace stopped, saw her father on one knee, and let out a delighted gasp.

"Say yes, Clare! Say yes!" Grace cheered, clapping her hands excitedly.

Clare laughed through her tears, looking from Grace’s beaming face back to Harrison’s loving eyes.

"Yes," Clare said softly, stepping forward. "Yes, Harrison! A thousand times yes!"

Harrison slipped the ring onto her finger, stood up, and pulled Clare into a deep, passionate embrace. Grace ran over, wrapping her arms around both of them, joining in a warm, tight family hug under the warm light of the Christmas tree.
