Chapter 4 - The Transfer of Power

Before Jason could fully process his mother’s declaration, Margaret called for her driver. Within an hour, she had whisked a reluctant, deeply bewildered Jason back to the house in Coyoacán.
When they arrived, the house was eerily silent. The two professional nannies Margaret had hired for the day were finishing up their duties. The house was spotless, the laundry was folded, the children were fed, bathed, and currently playing quietly in the backyard under supervision.
Jason stepped into the living room, feeling a wave of relief. "See? Look how calm it is when things are handled properly. I told you, Mom, it’s all about maintaining control."
Margaret turned to the two nannies, handed them generous envelopes of cash, and thanked them for their service. "You may go now, ladies. Mr. Collins will be taking over full management of the household from this moment forward."
The nannies packed their bags and departed, leaving the heavy front door to click shut behind them.
Jason turned to his mother with a light chuckle. "Alright, Mom, point taken. Emma gets a break. Where is she? When is she coming back tonight?"
"She isn't coming back tonight, Jason," Margaret said calmly, walking over to the dining room table where a large, thick leather binder was resting. Beside the binder lay a sleek metal key ring and a formal legal document.
"What is this?" Jason asked, his smile finally vanishing entirely.
"This binder contains the reality of your life," Margaret said, tapping the leather cover. "Inside, you will find the precise schedule for all four of your children.
"At 6:00 AM, the twins wake up and require immediate feeding, diaper changes, and medication for Mateo’s mild eczema. At 6:45 AM, Sofia and Leo must be woken, dressed, fed a balanced breakfast, and prepared for school. At 7:30 AM, you must load all four children into the car to drop Leo and Sofia at their respective schools, which are on opposite sides of the district due to their age groups.
"By 9:00 AM, you must return, clean the house, wash the morning dishes, sanitize the bottles, run three loads of laundry, and manage the twins' nap schedules while simultaneously trying to perform your work duties for your employer."
Jason stared at her, stunned. "Are you out of your mind? I have a full-time job! I have meetings! I have a quarterly review coming up!"
"So does Emma," Margaret replied coldly. "Her job is raising your human children. But since you believe her work is trivial and easily managed with basic organization, you will have no problem balancing both."
"This is absurd!" Jason shouted, his temper flaring. "I’m not doing this! I’ll just call Emma and tell her to get back here right now!"
He reached into his pocket for his phone, but Margaret reached out and placed a firm hand over his wrist.
"Emma’s phone has been turned off, Jason. She is at a private, secure location where you cannot reach her. Furthermore, if you attempt to abandon your children or hire unauthorized outside help to do your job for you, I will personally pull all financial backing from your marketing firm’s primary client—which, as you know, is one of my real estate holding companies."
Jason froze. His eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "You... you would ruin my career?"
"I would teach my son how to be a human being," Margaret corrected him softly. "You have taken everything for granted. You have treated your wife like a domestic servant and your children like background noise. You will run this household entirely by yourself for seven full days. No outside help. No Emma. No shortcuts."
She gestured to the formal legal document on the table. "I have paid off the remainder of your mortgage today, Jason. The house is officially secure. But if you fail this week—if you neglect your children, if you break down, or if you attempt to shirk your responsibilities—I will initiate legal proceedings to transfer full ownership of this home directly to Emma, along with a formal filing for legal separation on her behalf."
"Mom... you're my mother! How can you do this to me?!" Jason yelled, his voice cracking with a mixture of anger and rising panic.
"Because I am your mother, Jason," Margaret said, her voice dropping into a tone of heartbreaking sincerity. "I raised you alone after your father died. I worked sixteen-hour days so you would never know what cold, hunger, or despair felt like. I did not work myself to the bone so that my son could grow up to be a lazy, ungrateful tyrant who destroys the life of a good woman.
"I am doing this because I love you enough to stop you from becoming a complete failure of a man."
May you like
With those final words, Margaret turned on her heel, walked out the front door, and shut it firmly behind her.
From inside the quiet house, the sound of a baby crying suddenly echoed down the hallway.
