Chapter 6 - Out of the Shadow

Carmen’s attorney tried to salvage the situation. “Your Honor, my client was unaware of the severity of the situation. She believed her daughter was simply attempting to extort money from her, as she has done in the past.”

“Extort money?” David countered, his voice rising. “By sending a seven-year-old child with two dying infants in a shopping cart? Your Honor, we would like to play the voicemail that Mrs. Vance claimed she thought was 'just another dramatic plea'.”

David pressed play on a small recorder. The haunting sound of Anna’s weak, fading voice filled the courtroom once more.

“Mom… please… I can’t stand up… the babies haven’t eaten… please save them…”

As the recording played, Judge Carter’s face hardened into stone. She looked at Carmen, whose eyes were darting around the room, realizing that her money and influence could not buy her way out of this room.

“Mrs. Vance,” Judge Carter said, her voice dangerously quiet as she addressed Carmen. “Is it your testimony under oath that you received this message, and yet, when your seven-year-old granddaughter appeared at your door shortly after, you refused to open it?”

Carmen swallowed hard. “I… I have a security system. I didn't see her clearly. I thought—”

“You thought you could break your daughter’s spirit by withholding her medicine, and then swoop in to take her children as a twisted prize,” Judge Carter interrupted, her voice trembling with disgust. “I have been on this bench for twenty years, and I have rarely seen such a callous display of cruelty, let alone from a grandmother.”

The judge slammed her gavel down with a resounding crack.

“The petition for temporary custody by Carmen Vance is denied with prejudice. Furthermore, I am issuing a permanent restraining order. Mrs. Carmen Vance is to have no contact—direct or indirect—with Anna Vance or her three children. She is not to come within five hundred feet of their residence, school, or place of employment.”

Carmen gasped, her face turning a furious shade of red. “You can’t do this! I have rights!”

“You are lucky I am not ordering your immediate arrest for child endangerment today, Mrs. Vance,” Judge Carter replied coldly. “Though I suspect the District Attorney’s office, which has been forwarded copies of these files, will be contacting you very soon. Get out of my courtroom.”

Carmen’s attorney quickly grabbed his briefcase, whispering urgently to his client. Realizing she had lost completely, Carmen stood up, her pride shattered, and hurried out of the courtroom, leaving a trail of expensive perfume and broken dreams of control behind her.

Anna slumped forward in her chair, burying her face in her hands. This time, her tears were not of sorrow, but of absolute, overwhelming freedom. The shadow of her mother, which had loomed over her entire life, was finally gone.
