Chapter 8 - The Saturday Tradition Restored

Spring returned to Maple Ridge with a riot of blooming tulips and green shoots pushing through the melting frost.

Saturday story time at the Maple Ridge Public Library had become bigger than ever. Parents from all over the county brought their children, drawn by the reputation of a library that wasn't just a place for books, but a sanctuary of safety and community vigilance.

On a bright Saturday in April, the children's room was packed with kids sitting cross-legged on the colorful rug.

In the front row, sitting side-by-side with brand-new sketchpads and giant boxes of crayons, were Ava and Millie. Ava’s hair was tied back in a neat, cheerful yellow ribbon, and Millie was laughing loudly at a pop-up book about farm animals.

I sat on the wooden rocking chair beside the puppet theater, holding an illustrated edition of The Secret Garden.

As I began reading the opening lines, my eyes drifted across the room. I saw parents chatting quietly by the coffee station, Jackie managing the craft table with expert cheerfulness, and Eleanor sitting near the back corner, smiling warmly as she watched her daughters.

Ava looked up from her drawing pad, caught my eye, and gave me a small, knowing wink.

She held up her sketchpad for me to see from across the room. It wasn't a score chart. It wasn't a set of rules or a diagram of survival. It was a brightly colored drawing of a library building with flowers growing out of the roof, a giant smiling sun, and three stick figures standing hand-in-hand beneath the front door.

I smiled back, turned the page of the book, and continued the story.
