Chapter 6 - The Return to the Light

The sudden movement on the bed made Dr. Hayes step back in pure shock, his tablet nearly slipping from his fingers.

“Nurse Bennett, look at his eyes,” Dr. Hayes commanded, his voice tight with sudden adrenaline. “Prep the emergency cart just in case, but keep those vitals steady!”

Olivia didn’t move away from the bedside. Instead, she stepped closer, her eyes locked on Harrison’s face. She had seen patients experience random muscle twitches before—phantom reflexes that meant nothing. But this was different. This had intent.

Harrison’s fingers, which had been resting limply against the mattress, curled inward. His chest rose in a deep, shuddering gasp, as if he were drawing his very first breath after spending hours underwater.

Sarah gasped, pulling Maya back slightly against her skirt, though the little girl remained completely unafraid, a serene smile playing on her lips.

“Come on, Mr. Cole,” Olivia whispered softly, leaning in close enough for him to hear her voice above the hum of the monitors. “You’re safe. You’re at Saint Elora Medical Center. Take your time. Just breathe.”

Harrison’s brow furrowed tightly. A low, ragged sound escaped his throat—a sound that hadn’t been heard in Room 512 for nearly half a year. His eyelids fought against the heavy weight holding them down, fluttering once, twice, before finally parting.

At first, the harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital room felt like needles driving into his pupils. He squeezed his eyes shut with a groan, turning his head away from the glare.

“Dim the lights, quick!” Olivia instructed a nearby technician who had rushed into the room upon hearing the alarms.

Within seconds, the overhead fluorescents clicked down to a soft, warm amber glow.

Harrison slowly opened his eyes again. The blur of white coats and metallic equipment gradually resolved into sharp, distinct shapes. He blinked several times, his dry throat burning as he tried to swallow.

Dr. Hayes stepped forward with a penlight, gently lifting Harrison’s eyelid to check his pupillary response. “Mr. Cole? Can you hear me? If you can understand me, squeeze my hand.”

Harrison looked up at the doctor, his gaze sharp, intelligent, and piercingly aware. Slowly, deliberately, Harrison closed his fingers around Dr. Hayes’s hand.

A collective exhale of pure relief swept through the room. Dr. Hayes smiled, a rare, genuine expression of professional triumph breaking across his tired face. “Welcome back, Mr. Cole. Welcome back.”

Harrison didn’t answer right away. His eyes slowly panned across the room—past the doctors, past Olivia, stopping finally at the foot of the bed.

Standing half-hidden behind Sarah’s legs was Maya. She gave him a small, quiet wave with her fingers.

Harrison’s lips parted, and in a raspy, barely audible whisper, he spoke his first words since waking from the endless dark:

“The… the door… was open.”
