Part 2 – Three Flashes in the Rain

Part 2 – Three Flashes in the Rain

Arthur frowned as my headlights flashed once.

Twice.

Three times.

"What is she doing?" Beatrice muttered.

A pair of black SUVs rolled slowly around the corner.

Then another.

Their headlights cut through the rain like searchlights before all three vehicles stopped in front of our house.

Four men stepped out wearing dark suits.

Not police.

Not security guards.

The tallest one opened a large umbrella and walked straight toward me.

"Mrs. Hayes?"

I nodded cautiously.

He handed me a leather folder.

"My name is Michael Lawson. I served as your husband's attorney for the last seven years."

Arthur laughed.

"Attorney? David had no personal attorney."

Michael calmly looked toward him.

"Actually, Mr. Hayes retained my firm after learning of his leukemia."

Arthur's smile disappeared.

Michael opened the folder.

"Mrs. Hayes, your husband instructed us to act only if this exact situation occurred."

My heart pounded.

"I don't understand."

"You will."

He removed several documents.

"The letter you found contains the activation code."

I unfolded David's handwritten note completely.

His familiar handwriting blurred through my tears.

My Claire,

If you're reading this, my parents proved me right.

I prayed they would choose kindness.

I knew they wouldn't.

Forgive me for not telling you sooner.

I had to protect you.

Michael spoke softly.

"David transferred every personal asset into an irrevocable family trust eighteen months ago."

Arthur exploded.

"That's impossible!"

"It isn't."

Michael slid another document toward me.

"The house."

"My son owned this house!"

Michael shook his head.

"No."

He pointed to the deed.

"Claire Hayes has owned this property for sixteen months."

Silence.

Even the rain seemed quieter.

Arthur grabbed the papers.

"These are fake!"

Michael smiled politely.

"They were recorded with the county registry the day they were signed."

Beatrice suddenly looked pale.

"What about the company?"

Michael met Arthur's eyes.

"David anticipated you would attempt exactly this."

Another folder appeared.

"Thirty-eight percent of Hayes Medical Technologies belonged personally to David."

Arthur nodded confidently.

"Which I inherit."

"No."

Michael's voice remained calm.

"He sold every single share six months before his death."

Arthur blinked.

"To whom?"

Michael turned toward me.

"To the Hayes Family Trust."

My hands started shaking.

"I... own the trust?"

"You and your children."

Arthur stumbled backward.

"That's impossible."

Michael continued.

"Your husband also left a signed affidavit describing years of financial misconduct inside Hayes Medical Technologies."

Arthur's face turned white.

Michael looked almost sympathetic.

"He instructed us to deliver copies to federal investigators if you attempted to evict his family."

Arthur whispered,

"He wouldn't..."

Michael answered quietly.

"He already did."

Another SUV arrived.

This one carried two federal agents.

They walked directly toward Arthur.

"Arthur Hayes?"

He couldn't answer.

"We'd like to ask you several questions regarding securities fraud, tax evasion, and embezzlement."

Beatrice grabbed Arthur's arm.

"This is ridiculous!"

One agent held up a warrant.

"It isn't."

Arthur looked at me for the first time without arrogance.

Only fear.

Michael handed me one final envelope.

David had written only six words across the front.

Open after justice begins.

I carefully unfolded the paper.

Inside was another short letter.

Now go back inside our home.

It's yours.

It always was.

May you like

For the first time since David died...

I smiled.
