Part 2: The Vault Beneath Chicago

Vanessa Reed had spent years perfecting one talent.

Looking innocent.

As the airport officers escorted her toward Gate C19, her expression transformed from panic into polished outrage.

"This is ridiculous," she said loudly enough for nearby passengers to hear. "Those are my stepchildren. I was boarding first. Their grandmother was supposed to arrive."

She even produced tears.

The performance might have worked on strangers.

It didn't work on Adrian Cross.

He didn't raise his voice.

He simply held up Daniel's letter.

"You abandoned them."

"I did not."

"You boarded a flight to Miami."

"I was coming back."

"You told the gate agent they weren't yours."

Vanessa hesitated.

Just for half a second.

Airport police noticed.

So did Adrian.

The officer beside her asked quietly, "Ma'am, is that true?"

She smiled again.

"I was joking."

No one laughed.

Emma squeezed Ethan's hand tighter.

Adrian looked at the twins instead of Vanessa.

"Would either of you like to go with her?"

Both children answered at the same time.

"No."

The single word echoed louder than shouting.

...

Three hours later, Adrian's convoy rolled through downtown Chicago beneath falling snow.

The twins sat in the back of his armored SUV.

Neither had spoken much.

Emma kept one hand on Ethan's shoulder.

Ethan kept Major tucked safely beneath his arm.

Adrian watched them through the rearview mirror.

Daniel had prepared them.

Not for adventure.

For survival.

That realization hurt more than he expected.

Beside him, Dante studied the address from Daniel's note.

"A private vault beneath the old Harrison Bank."

Adrian nodded.

"It hasn't been used in years."

"Why would Daniel choose it?"

"Because nobody remembers it exists."

The lawyer cleared his throat.

"If Daniel established a second trust, he must have hidden documentation somewhere impossible to manipulate."

Adrian looked out the window.

"Let's find out."

...

The old Harrison Bank looked abandoned.

Dust covered the marble floors.

The lobby lights had long since gone dark.

Only one elderly caretaker waited inside.

His eyes widened the moment he saw the brass key.

"I've been expecting that."

Everyone froze.

"You... knew Daniel?" Adrian asked.

The old man smiled sadly.

"He visited twice."

"He said one day a man wearing a silver cross would come with two small children."

Emma stared.

"He really said that?"

"He did."

The caretaker unlocked a rusted security gate leading underground.

"What you're looking for is in Vault Twelve."

The air smelled of stone and old paper.

At the bottom of the stairs stood twelve steel doors.

Only one carried no number.

Instead, engraved into the metal was a tiny cross.

Adrian inserted the brass key.

The lock clicked instantly.

Inside wasn't money.

It wasn't jewelry.

It wasn't gold.

It was evidence.

Boxes.

Hard drives.

Photo albums.

Financial ledgers.

USB drives.

Legal documents.

Daniel hadn't hidden wealth.

He had hidden the truth.

The lawyer opened the first binder.

His face drained of color.

"My God..."

"What?"

"Daniel uncovered nearly eighty million dollars that vanished from the twins' inheritance."

Adrian looked up sharply.

"Vanessa?"

The lawyer nodded.

"And she's not alone."

Another folder contained property transfers.

Fake charities.

Forged signatures.

Offshore accounts.

Every document connected the same group of people.

Vanessa.

Her brother.

Two financial advisers.

A probate attorney.

Daniel had discovered the theft months before his death.

But that wasn't all.

Emma wandered toward a smaller wooden box tucked in the corner.

"Daddy wrote my name."

Inside rested two envelopes.

One read:

For Emma and Ethan—When You're Safe.

The other simply read:

For Adrian.

Adrian opened his first.

Daniel's handwriting looked rushed.

You once told me that every empire is judged by what it protects.

I laughed at you.

Now I'm asking you to prove you believed it.

If my children are standing beside you, then I failed to stay alive long enough.

Please don't let them grow up believing they were abandoned by everyone.

Adrian closed his eyes.

For the first time since Daniel's funeral...

He cried.

Only once.

Only silently.

Emma walked over.

Without saying anything...

May you like

She slipped her tiny hand into his.

He didn't pull away.
