Chapter 2 - The Shadow of Deception

The monitors around us beeped with a steady, mechanical rhythm that felt entirely disconnected from the sudden drop in temperature inside the room. Emma stepped closer to the bed, her eyes narrowing as she studied Dr. Daniel Brooks.

“What are you talking about?” Emma demanded, her voice sharp with protective instinct. “What could you possibly know about Michael that we don’t?”

Daniel didn’t answer immediately. He reached out with gloved hands to adjust a saline drip near my bed, his movements precise, almost mechanical, as if he were trying to buy time to assemble words he knew would shatter what little remained of my world. The sterile smell of antiseptic seemed to suffocate the air. My newborn daughter stirred against my chest, letting out a soft, tiny sigh that vibrated straight through my heart. She was innocent, warm, and entirely unaware that her life was beginning in the wreckage of a lie.

“Dr. Brooks,” I said, my voice hoarse from hours of screaming and crying. “Just tell me. I’ve already lost the illusion of a happy marriage tonight. Whatever it is, I can handle it.”

Daniel stopped moving. He looked down at me, his dark eyes reflecting a mixture of profound sorrow and a strange, cold anger.

“You think Michael is just working late with his assistant,” Daniel began, his voice barely above a whisper so the nurses bustling around the cleanup wouldn’t overhear. “You think this is a standard betrayal—an unfaithful husband wrapped up in a selfish affair while his wife is in labor.”

“Isn’t it?” Emma spat out. “We heard Vanessa on the phone. She sounded entirely too comfortable treating Catherine like an inconvenience.”

“Vanessa is just a symptom,” Daniel said grimly. He pulled a worn leather wallet from his back pocket, flipped it open, and slid a folded piece of paper across the metal tray beside my bed. “Look at this. It was handed to me less than an hour ago by someone who thought I was still working at St. Jude’s General across town. When I told them I was covering the night shift here at Mercy, they told me to give it to the woman in Room 304 if I happened to cross paths with her.”

My fingers trembled as I unfolded the paper. It was a printed bank statement—or rather, a series of transaction logs stamped with the seal of a private wealth management firm. At the top of the page, in bold lettering, was a name I recognized instantly: Harrison Holdings LLC.

Beneath it were numbers that made my stomach plunge into a bottomless pit. Millions of dollars. Moving outward in massive, unexplained wire transfers over the past three years.

“I don’t understand,” I whispered, staring at the rows of figures. “Michael is an architect. His firm makes a comfortable living, but we’ve never had millions. We live on a mortgage. We budget for groceries. What is this?”

“It’s not an architecture firm’s account, Catherine,” Daniel said, leaning in closer. “That’s a shell corporation. For the past three years, while you thought your husband was building commercial complexes and residential neighborhoods, he has been systematically draining every asset, every property, and every line of credit tied to your family name—including the inheritance your grandfather left you.”

The room seemed to tilt sideways. The steady beep of the heart monitor sounded like a hammer striking an anvil inside my head.

“My inheritance?” I choked out. “My grandfather’s trust fund? That was locked down until our child was born. Michael didn’t have the legal authority to touch it without my signature!”

“He didn’t need your signature,” Daniel replied bitterly. “Because six months ago, while you were pregnant and vulnerable, someone forged your power of attorney. And the notary public who certified that fraudulent document? Her name is Vanessa.”

Emma gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. “That bitch. She’s not just his mistress. She’s his accomplice.”

“She’s more than that,” Daniel added, his jaw tightening. “Michael hasn’t just been stealing your money, Catherine. He’s been laundering funds for a real estate syndicate that is currently under federal investigation. And guess whose name is listed as the primary managing director on the incorporation papers filed with the state?”

He paused, letting the silence stretch until it became unbearable.

“Yours.”
