Chapter 10 - The Horizon We Chose

Summer had arrived in full splendor across the shores of Lake Geneva. The water sparkled like hammered silver under a brilliant, cloudless sky, and the sprawling lawns of the Whitman estate were a vibrant, manicured green.
On the back patio, a large wooden picnic table was set up with a white linen cloth, piled high with grilled food, fresh fruit, and a massive chocolate birthday cake adorned with eight flickering candles.
Ethan, now sporting a fresh summer haircut and a bright blue polo shirt, stood at the edge of the lawn holding a baseball bat, trying to teach the golden retriever how to fetch a rubber ball—though the dog seemed far more interested in chasing butterflies.
Andrew walked out through the sliding glass doors, carrying a tray of iced lemonade. He paused for a moment on the stone patio, watching the boy laugh as the dog bounded past him in a blur of golden fur.
Fifteen months ago, Andrew Whitman had been a ghost walking through the rain, convinced that his life had ended on a wet highway in December. He had possessed every luxury the world could buy, yet had been utterly, hopelessly poor in the only currency that truly mattered.
Then a frightened, soaked little boy had slammed into his chest and whispered six words that changed the trajectory of the universe: "Please pretend you're hugging me."
"Dad!" Ethan shouted, waving the baseball bat in the air. "Hurry up! The candles are melting!"
Andrew smiled, a deep, radiant warmth spreading outward from his chest, chasing away every lingering ghost of the past. He set the tray down on the table, walked out onto the sunlit grass, and scooped the boy up into his arms, swinging him around in a wide circle as Ethan's joyous laughter rang out into the bright summer air.

"Alright, Mr. King," Andrew laughed, setting him back down and gently messing up his hair. "Let's blow out those candles before the dragon eats them."
They walked side by side toward the table, hand in hand, stepping into a future that was bright, limitless, and completely, beautifully their own.
