Chapter 9 - Dawn After the Longest Night

The flight to the city was smooth. Wrapped in warm blankets inside the heated cabin of the private medical helicopter, Maya looked out the window at the vast, snow-covered mountains shrinking beneath them. For the first time in her memory, she wasn't cold. She wasn't hungry. And she wasn't afraid.

Beside her, Jasper held Noah carefully in his lap, nursing the baby with a fresh bottle provided by the medical team. The billionaire who had spent his adult life shunning human connection was handling the infant with natural, protective grace.

When they arrived at the university hospital, Jasper led Maya down a quiet, brightly lit corridor toward the private recovery suite.

Through the glass panel of the door, Maya saw her mother. Elena Vance was sitting up in bed, hooked up to IV lines and oxygen monitors, but her face had regained its color. She looked tired, but her eyes were alert and filled with tears as she watched the door.

“Mama!” Maya cried, dropping her blanket and running into the room.

Elena reached out with weak arms, pulling her daughter into a tight, desperate embrace. “Maya! Oh God, Maya! I was so scared... they told me you were gone...”

“The nice man saved us, Mama!” Maya sobbed into her mother’s shoulder. “He fought the sheriff and took us to his castle and made us soup!”

Elena looked up over her daughter’s head, her tear-filled eyes landing on Jasper, who was standing quietly in the doorway, holding baby Noah in his arms.

“Mr. Blackwood?” Elena whispered, her voice trembling. “The doctors... they told me what you did. You paid for the helicopter, the specialists, the debt... why? I don't have anything to give you.”

Jasper walked over to the bed and carefully placed the sleeping baby into Elena’s free arm.

“You don’t owe me anything, Mrs. Vance,” Jasper said softly. “Your daughter walked through a blizzard holding her brother to save him. She taught me what real strength looks like. The least I could do was make sure she had a mother to come back to.”

Elena buried her face in her infant’s soft hair, weeping quietly with overwhelming gratitude. “I don’t know how I’ll ever repay you...”

“You don't have to,” Jasper said. “Just focus on getting well.”
