Chapter 6 - The Final Ledger

The confession hung in the freezing air between us, deadlier than any bullet.

Marco’s smile lingered for a fraction of a second too long, driven by the arrogance of a man who believed he held all the cards. He didn't see the tiny red laser dot land squarely on the center of his chest.

“You forgot one thing, Marco,” I said calmly.

His smile faltered. “What?”

“You taught me how to run this syndicate,” I replied, my eyes fixed on his. “And the first rule of the Moretti family is that betrayal is paid in full, with interest.”

From the shadows of the stone colonnade behind him, the sharp click of three rifle safeties disengaging echoed in unison. Antonio and two of our top marksmen had Marco bracketed from every angle.

Marco’s face drained of color. The umbrella slipped from his fingers, hitting the wet gravel with a dull thud as the rain beat down on his shoulders.

“Wait,” Marco stammered, his polished veneer shattering instantly into raw panic. “Alessio—think about what you’re doing. Without me, your financial connections in Zurich—they’ll collapse! The council won't—agency will—”

“The council answers to me,” I said, stepping past him as Antonio and the guards moved in, their hands clamping onto Marco’s arms with iron grips, relieving him of his concealed pistol and his encrypted phone.

They forced him to his knees in the mud.

I looked down at the man who had been my shadow for over a decade, the man who had orchestrated the murder of the woman I loved and tried to burn my surviving child to ash.

“Take him to the basement vault,” I ordered. “We’ll review the ledger together page by page tomorrow morning. Every single offshore account, every hidden asset, every lie he wrote down. And when we are finished, he will join the ghosts he created.”

“Alessio! You can't do this!” Marco screamed as they dragged him across the courtyard, his expensive shoes kicking up dark mud against the pristine stone. “You’ll destroy everything we built!”

“What we built,” I said coldly, turning my back on him, “was built on a lie.”
