Chapter 9 - The Time Capsule

That evening, the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant shades of amber, violet, and deep indigo.

Back at the Carter residence, the living room was filled with laughter and the rustle of wrapping paper. Ethan, Sophie, and Noah sat cross-legged on the plush living room rug surrounded by colored markers, cardboard boxes, and old photograph albums.

"Daddy, is this really what you looked like when you were little?" Sophie asked, holding up a faded polaroid photo of Ethan with bowl-cut hair standing proudly next to a red tricycle.

Ethan laughed, leaning over to ruffle her hair. "Guilty as charged. Complete with unfortunate fashion choices courtesy of my mother."

"You look funny," Noah giggled, pointing a sticky marshmallow at the picture.

"Alright, alright, courtroom adjourned," Ethan chuckled, gently taking the photo and sliding it into a brand-new, leather-bound family album titled The Carter Family Chronicles.

Beside the album sat a sturdy metal lockbox. Inside it, Ethan had carefully placed Megan’s final letter, Detective Miller’s official case summary, and all the dark remnants of a nightmare that they had successfully survived. He locked the box with a small brass key, walked over to the hallway closet, and placed it on the top shelf, pushing it far into the back where it would remain undisturbed forever.

He didn't want to forget Megan—she was the heart and soul of their family, and her memory would always be cherished, spoken of with love and laughter every single day. But the darkness that had tried to consume them was locked away where it belonged.

"Hey, kids," Ethan said, walking back into the living room and kneeling down beside them. "Who wants to plant a tree in the backyard tomorrow?"

Sophie’s eyes lit up. "Can we plant apple trees?"

"As many apple trees as you want," Ethan smiled. "And we can build that treehouse we talked about. Just the three of us."

"Yay!" Noah cheered, throwing his arms around Ethan’s neck and squeezing tightly.

May you like

Sophie joined in, wrapping her arms around her father’s waist. Ethan pulled them both close, burying his face in their hair, feeling an overwhelming wave of peace wash over him.

The storm had passed. The house was filled with warmth once again.
