PART 3 — “When Evidence Starts to Breathe”
The first thing I did was not scream.
Not call out.
Not beg.
I reached for the small emergency phone taped under the workbench.
The one Daniel didn’t know existed.
Because he never cleaned this garage.
And Margaret never came down here alone.
My thumb hovered for half a second.
Then I pressed the button.
One contact.
My attorney.
Elena Park.
Three rings.
Then a click.
“Talk to me,” she said immediately.
My voice came out fractured, but clear enough.
“I’m in the garage. They took my medication. They locked me in. The camera is still running.”
A pause.
Then her tone changed completely.
“Is the device angled toward them?”
“Yes.”
“Is the safe visible?”
“Yes.”
Another pause.
This one colder.
“Good,” she said. “Do not move. Do not stop recording. You’ve already won more than you think.”
Inside the house, a loud thud echoed.
Margaret again.
Angrier now.
“They’re hiding something in here,” she snapped.
Daniel’s voice followed, less certain.
“Mom… I think we should—”
“No,” she cut him off. “She signed something. I know she did. Find it.”
I almost laughed.
If only they knew.
I shifted slightly, pain flashing through my leg again, and angled myself so the camera would catch the garage door reflection.
Enough to see movement.
Enough to record truth.
A shadow crossed the crack under the door.
Then another.
They were close.
I could hear Margaret now, right on the other side.
“Claire,” she called sweetly. “Let’s not make this worse.”
Silence from me.
Then Daniel, quieter:
“Claire… just open the door.”
For a moment, I didn’t respond.
Then I spoke—soft enough that only the microphone would catch it.
“I already did.”
A beat of silence.
Inside the house, something changed.
Not sound.
Understanding.
Because Daniel knew that tone.
It wasn’t fear.
It was certainty.
Above me, the blue light kept blinking.
