Chapter 4 - Echoes of the Past
Two days after the incident at the hospital, the dust had begun to settle, though the aftermath was far-reaching.
I was sitting in my office late in the evening, reviewing patient charts, when a gentle knock came at the door. I looked up to see Julian Vance standing in the doorway, holding two paper cups of coffee.
"May I?" he asked politely.
"Of course, Julian. Come in," I said, pointing to the leather chair across from my desk.
He handed me a cup and sat down, letting out a long, exhausted sigh. "I wanted to apologize for the scene in the pediatric wing the other day. It wasn't the ideal place to serve those papers, but Melinda had been evading our process servers for a week."
"You don't need to apologize," I said, taking a sip of the warm liquid. "In a strange way, you brought a truth to light that I needed to hear, even if I thought I had already moved past it."
Julian studied my face for a moment. His dark eyes were intelligent and kind, lacking the superficial sheen I had become so accustomed to with Connor. "It takes a remarkable amount of strength to remain as calm as you did. Most people would have let anger take over."
"I spent my anger during the divorce," I admitted, leaning back in my chair. "When you spend years believing you are inadequate, finding out it was all a lie doesn't make you angry right away. It makes you feel... free. Like a weight you didn't know you were carrying was suddenly lifted."
"My brother Arthur wasn't a good man," Julian said quietly, looking down at his coffee. "He was careless with people's lives, much like Connor. When he passed away, he left behind a massive estate and a web of lies. But that little boy... Samuel... he doesn't deserve to be a pawn in their games."
"What will happen to him?" I asked, genuine concern touching my heart. Whatever my history with Melinda and Connor, the child was entirely innocent.
"My family and I are taking full custody," Julian explained. "Melinda has agreed to surrender her parental rights in exchange for the Vance estate dropping fraud and extortion charges against her. She will receive a modest stipend for mental health rehabilitation, but she will no longer be allowed to use Samuel as a bargaining chip."
"And Connor?"
Julian offered a grim, small smile. "Mr. Fleming is facing severe legal complications. He signed a legal acknowledgment of paternity knowing there was a possibility it wasn't his, purely to accelerate his divorce settlement and avoid certain asset distributions with you. My lawyers are currently cooperating with your divorce attorney to audit your past property settlement."
I blinked in surprise. "An audit?"

"Yes," Julian said, his voice softening. "He defrauded you, Dr. Sinclair. And we are going to make sure you get back everything he stole from you—financially and legally."
For the first time in a very long time, I felt a genuine sense of protection, not from a partner, but from a man who simply believed in justice.
