Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of a Lie

By 5:00 PM, the news had already filtered through the executive suites of Hail Maritime and leaked into the financial district blogs. Hail Maritime Heir Hit With Explosive Adultery and Asset-Freeze Lawsuit.
I sat in the quiet study of Julian’s Walnut Street townhouse, watching the local news ticker crawl across the bottom of the television screen. Beside me, Sarah Lin sipped a glass of sparkling water, looking thoroughly pleased with herself.
“Richard Hail’s PR team is currently in full-blown panic mode,” Sarah noted, tapping her tablet. “They’re trying to scrub Claire Whitmore’s name from the corporate directory, but our forensic accountants already mirrored their server logs. Every internal email between Marcus and Claire dating back eighteen months is safely secured in our discovery cache.”
“Eighteen months?” I murmured, staring into my teacup. “He was cheating on me almost half our marriage.”
“Most cheaters aren't masterminds, Amelia. They’re lazy,” Sarah said gently. “They rely on the assumption that their partners are too invested, too trusting, or too dependent to walk away. Marcus built his entire life on the belief that you were his safety net—someone who would look the other way because the alternative was too disruptive.”
My phone buzzed. It wasn't an unknown number this time.
It was Marcus.
I looked at Sarah. She nodded, giving me the go-ahead. I pressed speakerphone.
“Amelia?” Marcus’s voice sounded ragged, stripped of its usual polished confidence. He sounded desperate, breathless, and utterly cornered. “Amelia, please. Where are you? What is this madness?”
“It’s not madness, Marcus,” I said, my voice level and cold. “It’s reality. Have you finished reading the affidavit yet?”
“That—that was a mistake!” he stammered frantically over the line. “Claire meant nothing! It was a stupid, meaningless mistake at the office, and she caught me at a weak moment! You know how hard things have been with the fertility treatments, how stressed I’ve been—”
“Don't you dare,” I interrupted, my voice sharpening with a sudden surge of righteous fury. “Don't you dare blame our fertility struggles for your betrayal. I was the one taking the hormone injections, enduring the medical procedures, and crying alone in clinic parking lots while you were sleeping with your father’s communications director in our bed wearing my clothes!”
Silence fell over the line, heavy and suffocating.
When Marcus spoke again, his voice dropped to a terrified whisper.
“How... how did you know about the clothes?”
“I was standing in the hallway, Marcus,” I said quietly. “I watched you kiss her. I heard every word you said to her. You called me safe.”
“Amelia, please—”
“We’re done talking, Marcus. My lawyer handles everything from here on out. If you call me again, I’m filing an additional restraining order for harassment.”
I tapped the screen and hung up.
The room was utterly silent. Julian walked in from the hallway, carrying a fresh pot of chamomile tea. He set it down on the mahogany table, looking at me with a steady, compassionate gaze.

“Well handled,” Julian said softly. “He’s realizing for the first time that his world is no longer under his control.”
“He deserves every bit of it,” Sarah added, standing up to gather her briefcase. “Next stop is the temporary alimony and custody hearing next Tuesday. Rest up, Amelia. The hardest part is behind us.”
