Chapter 5 - Behind the Facade

The discovery of the Blackwood Lake property shifted the police investigation into high gear. Detective Miller called Daniel and me to the station early the next morning for a briefing with the State Police Tactical Unit.
We sat in a small conference room surrounded by maps of the state, mugshots of Richard, and structural diagrams of the remote cabin discovered through satellite imaging.
“Thanks to the ledger Mrs. Pierce recovered,” Detective Miller began, tapping a map on the whiteboard, “we’ve identified Richard’s location. The property is a heavily secluded cabin situated on twenty acres of dense pine forest off an unpaved logging road near Blackwood Lake.”
Daniel stared at the photo of the cabin. It was a dark, two-story wooden structure surrounded by thick trees, completely invisible from the main road.
“I didn’t even know he owned this place,” Daniel said, his voice laced with betrayal. “He always told us he spent his retirement savings on his house in town.”
“Richard maintained three different shell companies over the last thirty years,” Miller explained. “He used them to launder money from illegal chemical sales and purchase real estate under assumed names. He’s a man who spent his entire life building escape hatches.”
A senior state trooper named Captain Harris stood up. “We attempted a quiet reconnaissance sweep of the perimeter last night using thermal imaging drones. The cabin is active. We detected heat signatures inside, as well as a vehicle parked under a camouflage tarp behind the generator shed.”
“Is he alone?” I asked, leaning forward.
“We believe so,” Harris replied. “However, the terrain works heavily in his favor. The logging road is impassable by standard vehicles due to recent snowfall. If we move in with heavy tactical vehicles, he’ll hear us coming from two miles away. He’s armed with long-range hunting rifles and knows the woods better than any of our men.”
“Then how are you going to take him?” Daniel asked.
“We’re setting up a containment perimeter,” Harris said. “We’re going to cut off his power, block the logging routes, and negotiate a peaceful surrender before moving in with a tactical team.”
“He won't surrender,” Daniel said quietly.
The room fell silent. Everyone turned to look at my husband.
“My father will not allow himself to be put in a cage,” Daniel continued, his eyes cold and hollow. “He views himself as superior to everyone in this room. He believes he is smarter than the law. If you try to negotiate with him, he’ll use that time to set traps or slip through your perimeter.”
“What do you suggest, Mr. Pierce?” Captain Harris asked.
“Don’t give him time to think,” Daniel said fiercely. “Go in hard and fast. Do not let him dictate the rules anymore.”
After the briefing, Daniel and I walked out into the chilly parking lot. He stopped near our car, staring at his hands.
“Daniel?” I asked softly, placing a hand on his shoulder.
“I used to idolize him, Sarah,” he said, a tear escaping his eye and freezing on his cheek. “When I was a kid, I thought he was strict because he wanted me to be strong. When he yelled at my mother, I thought it was because she made mistakes. I spent my whole life trying to earn his respect, trying to make him proud.”
“You didn't know,” I comforted him. “None of us knew the extent of his madness.”
“I should have seen it,” he insisted, his voice cracking. “When he left Emma in that truck outside the bar... I should have cut him off right then. If I had listened to you instead of trying to keep the peace, Emma wouldn’t be sitting in a hospital bed with her face wrapped in bandages.”

I pulled Daniel into a tight hug. “We can’t change what happened yesterday, Daniel. But we are going to finish this today. For Emma.”
He held me tightly, nodding against my shoulder. The illusion of Richard Pierce—the respectable grandfather, the retired businessman—had completely shattered. All that remained was a predator hiding in the dark, waiting for his final showdown.
