Chapter 8 - The Arraignment

Three days later, the courtroom of the County Superior Court was cold, sterile, and packed with an intense, suffocating quiet. Flashbulbs popped outside the double doors as media outlets caught wind of the horrifying nature of the Christmas morning poisoning.
Richard Pierce sat at the defense table wearing an orange jumpsuit. His hair was uncombed, and his usual air of arrogant confidence had been replaced by a bitter, sullen glare. He refused to look toward the gallery where Daniel and I sat side by side.
Our attorney, a sharp woman named Eleanor Vance, placed a comforting hand on Daniel’s knee before standing up to address the judge.
“Your Honor, the prosecution presents overwhelming physical, documentary, and audio evidence establishing that the defendant, Richard Pierce, premeditated and executed a malicious chemical assault upon his nine-year-old granddaughter,” Eleanor stated, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the courtroom. “We have recovered the original audio recordings detailing the creation of the toxic compound, financial records proving premeditation, and witness testimony establishing a pattern of abusive manipulation.”
The judge, a stern elderly man with silver hair, looked down over his spectacles at Richard. “Mr. Pierce, do you have any statement to offer before the court enters a formal plea and remands you without bond?”
Richard stood up slowly, leaning his hands against the wooden table. For a second, his eyes swept across the courtroom and finally locked onto Daniel. There was no remorse in his gaze—only cold, burning contempt.
“My son married a weak woman,” Richard said, his voice echoing off the courtroom walls with chilling calmness. “I was merely trying to correct a broken household. If the child suffered, it is only because her mother failed to guide her properly.”
A collective gasp rippled through the gallery. Daniel flinched as if he had been physically struck, but then, slowly, he straightened his back. He looked at his father not with fear or hesitation anymore, but with absolute, definitive closure.
“Mr. Pierce,” the judge interrupted sharply, his voice booming with authority. “Your arrogance matches your depravity. You are remanded to state custody without the possibility of bail, facing multiple felony counts of attempted murder, aggravated child abuse, and chemical endangerment. This court finds you an extreme danger to society.”

Gavel slammed down with a resounding crack.
Two bailiffs stepped forward, grabbing Richard by the shoulders and hauling him backward toward the holding cells. He didn't struggle; he simply kept his eyes fixed straight ahead, an isolated, pathetic old man who had traded his entire family legacy for his own unyielding malice.
