Chapter 10 - The Horizon

The sun was setting behind the tree line, casting long, golden ribbons across the freshly mown lawn as I stepped out onto the front porch with a cup of herbal tea.

The neighborhood was alive with the sound of children laughing down the street, dogs barking in distant yards, and the sweet, earthy scent of spring blossoms hanging heavy in the evening air.

The front gate clicked open.

Grace came running up the walkway, her backpack slung over one shoulder, hair tied back in a messy ponytail, holding a bright yellow painting on construction paper.

“Mom! Look what I made in art class today!” she shouted, bounding up the steps and thrusting the paper into my hands.

I looked down. It was a finger-painting of a large, sturdy castle standing proudly under a bright golden sun, surrounded by green fields and blooming flowers. Written across the top in wobbly, crayon-written letters were the words: OUR CASTLE.

I knelt down, pulling her into my arms and burying my face in her hair, breathing in the sweet scent of sunshine and childhood.

“It’s beautiful, baby,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. “The strongest castle in the whole world.”

“And nobody can ever kick us out, right?” she asked, looking up at me with those wide, clear, beautiful eyes.

I smiled, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead, feeling the absolute, unbreakable weight of our future resting safely in our own hands.

“Nobody, sweetheart,” I said softly, looking out toward the bright, wide horizon. “Nobody ever again.”
