Chapter 4 - The Panic on Elm Street

While we sat peacefully in the warm farmhouse, chaos was erupting inside the house on Elm Street.
Corbin Mercer had stepped out of the shower, wrapped a towel around his waist, and walked into the kitchen, expecting Vanessa to greet him with a gourmet breakfast. Instead, he found Vanessa standing by the kitchen island, staring pale-faced at her laptop screen, while his mother paced back and forth like a caged animal.
"Corbin," Vanessa said, her voice trembling. "What is this?"
Corbin frowned, walking over and grabbing a cup of coffee. "What's what? Vane, relax. It's Christmas morning. Let's not let my ex-wife's antics ruin our mood. Did her father call or something?"
"No," Elaine hissed, grabbing Corbin by the arm and spinning him around. "Everett just called. He was speaking in riddles, talking about page fourteen of your asset-protection agreement. Corbin... what did you sign before you married Clara?"
Corbin scoffed, rolling his eyes. "Mom, please. That was standard paperwork from dad’s corporate attorney. It protected my inheritance and the firm's assets in case things went south. It was a standard waiver giving Clara zero rights to Mercer & Associates stock."
"Then why did my corporate legal team just flag an emergency override on our primary business accounts?" Vanessa shouted, spinning the laptop around so the screen faced him.
Corbin squinted at the monitor. The corporate dashboard for Mercer & Associates showed a massive, automated asset freeze. A bold red notification banner flashed across the top of the page: PRIMARY BENEFICIARY OVERRIDE INITIATED BY TRUSTEE LANGSTON, E. - POWER OF ATTORNEY & CONTROLLING SHAREHOLDER.
Corbin’s coffee mug slipped from his hand, shattering against the hardwood floor. Hot dark liquid splashed across his bare feet, but he didn't feel it.
"That's... that's impossible," Corbin stammered, his face draining of all color. "Everett is a retired colonel on a fixed pension! How does he have controlling shares in Mercer & Associates? That company belongs to the Vance family!"
At that exact moment, the front doorbell chimed.
Elaine rushed to the front door and jerked it open, expecting a courier. Instead, standing on the porch were two uniformed local police officers accompanied by a sharp-suited man carrying a leather briefcase.
"Mr. Corbin Mercer?" the man asked calmly.
"Who the hell are you?" Corbin yelled, marching down the hallway in his towel and wet footprints.
"My name is Arthur Pendelton," the man said, flashing a badge and a legal ID. "I am senior counsel for Langston Holdings LLC. And I am here to serve you with an immediate eviction and asset-seizure notice for this property, as well as a federal injunction regarding corporate fraud."

Corbin stared at the lawyer, his brain refusing to process the words. "Eviction? From my house? I own this house!"
Attorney Pendelton smiled coldly, pulling a document from his briefcase and holding it out. "Actually, Mr. Mercer... you haven't owned this house, or your car, or your architectural firm, for nearly three years. Colonel Everett Langston purchased the mortgage and the corporate debt outright the day after your wedding. And today... he has decided to call the loan."
