Chapter 4 - The Confession at Dawn

The morning sun cast a pale, cold light over the sprawling offices of Bennett Enterprises. Julian Bennett sat behind his glass desk, nursing a cup of black coffee, feeling invincible. At thirty-two, he had engineered the hostile takeover of Tech Innovate, slashed payroll by forty percent, and successfully purged what he called "dead weight."

The door to his office swung open without a knock.

Julian frowned, looking up with a sharp reprimand ready on his lips. But the words died in his throat. It wasn't an assistant. It was his father.

Richard Bennett looked older this morning, the lines around his eyes carved deep by a sleepless night of agonizing realization. He carried a single manila folder in his hand.

"Dad?" Julian forced a confident smile, though a sudden chill crept down his spine. "What are you doing here on Christmas morning? I thought you’d be resting."

Richard walked in slowly, his footsteps echoing on the polished concrete floor. He didn't return the smile. He didn't even take off his overcoat. He stopped directly in front of Julian’s desk, placed the manila folder down, and slid it across the glass surface.

"Open it," Richard said. His voice was dangerously quiet, stripped of all warmth.

Julian swallowed hard, his bravado faltering. He reached out and flipped open the folder. On top lay the personnel adjustment file for Tech Innovate, specifically highlighting the termination of Emily Thompson. Beneath it were the printed email exchanges between Julian and Human Resources, complete with his explicit directive to find a loophole before her maternity leave.

Julian’s face flushed red. "This... this is internal operations. How did you—"

"How did I find out that my own son used my company as a weapon to destroy an innocent woman?" Richard interrupted, his eyes burning with a cold fury Julian had never witnessed before. "How did I find out that you threw a pregnant employee onto the street just to pad our quarterly efficiency metrics?"

"She was a liability!" Julian snapped back, standing up to match his father's gaze, panic bleeding into anger. "Women like that take maternity leave, milk the system, and stall projects. I did what was necessary for the bottom line. You taught me to be ruthless! You built this empire on hard decisions!"

Slap.

The sound cracked through the quiet office like a gunshot. Julian stumbled back, clutching his cheek, staring at his father in absolute shock. Richard’s hand was trembling, not from weakness, but from an overwhelming surge of disgust.

"I taught you how to build," Richard whispered, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "I never taught you how to become a monster. You didn't just fire an employee, Julian. Do you have any idea who that woman is?"

"She's nobody! Just another statistic!"

"She is carrying your child."

The office fell into a dead, suffocating silence. Julian stared at his father, the color draining entirely from his face. His lips parted, but no sound came out.

"My... what?" Julian choked out.

May you like

"A boy," Richard said, his voice hard as iron. "Due in eight weeks. The woman you threw into the freezing snow on Christmas Eve, the woman you left with two dollars and seventy-five cents in her pocket, is carrying your flesh and blood. And last night, I was the one who found her freezing on a park bench."

Julian collapsed back into his chair, the foundation of his entire world crumbling beneath him in a single instant.
