Chapter 5 - The Ambush at Willow Creek

The distinct clock tower chime recorded during Richard’s phone call matched only one location within a hundred-mile radius: the historic Old Mill Inn near Willow Creek, a deserted resort town that had been shut down for the winter season. The town sat right beside the timberland boundary owned by Eleanor’s family trust.
Detective Jenkins rallied a tactical response team. Daniel insisted on coming along with the police convoy, unable to sit idly while the man who had tormented our family roamed free. I stayed behind with Emma at my sister’s secured apartment in the city, holding my breath with every minute that ticked by.
At 4:30 AM, state tactical units surrounded the snow-covered grounds of the Old Mill Inn. The temperature had plunged well below zero, and a howling blizzard masked the sound of approaching police boots.
Inside the main cabin, Richard was preparing to cross the northern border into Canada. He had forged passport documents, stacks of bearer bonds, and a duffel bag filled with cached currency. But as he stepped out onto the cabin porch carrying his luggage, high-powered searchlights cut through the darkness, illuminating the swirling snow.
"Richard Pierce! This is the State Police! Drop your weapon and put your hands on your head!"
Richard froze. Instead of surrendering, his eyes flashed with manic rage. He drew a concealed snub-nosed revolver from his heavy coat and fired two shots toward the police line.
"I gave you everything, Daniel!" Richard screamed into the freezing night, spotting Daniel standing behind the armored tactical vehicle. "You were weak! Just like your mother!"
"Throw down the gun, Dad!" Daniel yelled back through a megaphone, his voice breaking with deep agony and anger. "It's over! Stop hurting us!"
A tense standoff ensued. Tactical officers advanced under ballistic shields. Richard fired another shot, but an officer deployed a non-lethal flashbang grenade, deafening and disorienting him. The impact knocked Richard off his feet, sending his revolver skittering across the icy wooden deck.
Within seconds, tactical officers tackled him to the ground, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
As they lifted Richard to his feet, his coat caked in snow, he looked directly at Daniel. His face was twisted in a bitter, unrepentant scowl. "You ruined this family, Daniel. You let a woman break our legacy."

Daniel stepped forward, looking his father dead in the eye with complete calm and authority. "You were never our family, Richard. You were just a tyrant. And today, your reign ends."
When news reached me at 5:15 AM that Richard was in custody without any officers or Daniel being injured, tears of profound relief flooded my eyes. I collapsed onto the couch, holding Emma tightly in my arms as she slept soundly, safe at last.
