Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Foyer

The air in the grand foyer dropped to freezing as Victor Maroni stepped further into the Costa mansion. His expensive wool coat was unbuttoned, revealing a diamond-encrusted watch and a silver lapel pin bearing the insignia of his family crest.

Abigail stopped near the base of the grand staircase, the basket of laundry clutched securely in her arms. She didn't drop it, nor did she cower. Her calm, steady brown eyes met Maroni’s predatory gaze with quiet, unflinching resolve.

"Who’s this?" Maroni purred, taking a slow step toward her. "Leonardo finally upgraded his interior decorating? Or is this the new housekeeper who doesn't know whose house she's walking into?"

"I know exactly whose house this is," Abigail replied, her voice steady and clear, echoing off the marble floors. "And I also know that you are tracking mud onto a freshly cleaned carpet. Please wipe your feet or leave."

Maroni’s smile vanished, replaced by a flash of dangerous irritation. In his world, no one—especially an ordinary woman in a simple sweater—spoke to him that way.

"You must have a very short lifespan in this house, sweetheart," Maroni hissed, stepping closer.

Before Maroni could take another step, a cold, lethal voice sliced through the foyer like a razor blade.

"Touch her, Victor, and you won't leave this property alive."

Maroni froze.

From the top of the grand staircase, Leonardo descended. He hadn't been at his Manhattan office; a security alert had triggered his private feed the moment Maroni’s car breached the estate gates. Leonardo wore his charcoal overcoat, his dark eyes locked onto Maroni with a lethal, absolute fury that made the rival boss take an involuntary step back.

"Leo," Maroni forced a tight, nervous smile, turning around. "I was just introducing myself to your... staff."

"She is not staff," Leonardo said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly quiet register as he reached the bottom of the landing and stepped directly between Maroni and Abigail. "She is under my protection. And you are trespassing."

"I came to talk business," Maroni said, raising his hands defensively. "The North River docks. We need to renegotiate the distribution terms before things get... complicated."

"Things got complicated the moment you walked through my front door uninvited," Leonardo replied, signaling toward the security team stationed outside. Four armed men in dark suits immediately flooded the foyer, their hands resting near their holsters. "Get out of my house, Victor. And if you ever look at her—or any member of my family—with that expression again, I won't just lock you out of the docks. I’ll burn your entire operation to the ground."

Maroni’s face turned pale with suppressed rage. He glared at Leonardo, then cast one final, venomous glance at Abigail before turning on his heel and storming out toward his sedan.

As the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind Maroni, the tension in the foyer remained thick and suffocating.

Leonardo turned slowly to face Abigail. The lethal fury in his eyes instantly melted into a deep, searching concern.

"Are you alright?" he asked, his voice softening.

"I'm fine," Abigail said, adjusting the basket of laundry in her arms. "Though I think your visitor has very poor manners. And worse taste in shoes."

A sudden, sharp snort of laughter escaped Leonardo’s lips. The tension shattered completely, replaced by a warm, quiet intimacy.

"You have ice water in your veins, Abigail Turner," Leonardo murmured, stepping closer to her. "Most people run when Victor Maroni walks into a room."

"Most people aren't responsible for a house full of hungry children," Abigail replied with a gentle smile. "And a man who tracks mud inside doesn't scare me."
