Chapter 5 - An Invitation Written in Gold

On Wednesday morning at Joyner Elementary School, the second-grade classroom of Miss Davis was quiet.

Maya Lin sat at her small desk in the back row, her eyes fixed firmly on her drawing pad. She was trying very hard to be invisible. Ever since Monday, she had been terrified that her classmates would ask why no one showed up to her house, or worse, that someone would make fun of her ruined birthday hat.

Beside her, a boy named Marcus was chewing on his eraser. Across the aisle, Lily was whispering to her best friend. Everything felt normal, grey, and painfully ordinary.

Then, at precisely 10:15 AM, the floor began to vibrate.

It started as a low, deep rumble that rattled the pencils in their desk grooves. Then came the sound of brass instruments—a bright, triumphant fanfare that sounded like it belonged in a royal court.

Miss Davis dropped her chalk, her eyes wide with shock. "What in the world..."

The classroom door didn't just open; it flew wide.

Stepping into the fluorescent-lit classroom were four performers dressed in elaborate, shimmering velvet coats of deep blue and gold. Behind them came two trumpeters with long silver horns, playing a majestic melody that echoed down the hallway.

The entire class gasped. Kids stood up on their chairs.

The lead performer, a tall woman wearing a top hat with a glowing peacock feather, stepped into the center of the room and unrolled a scroll made of heavy, golden-edged parchment.

"Is this the esteemed academy of Joyner Elementary?" the woman proclaimed in a booming, theatrical voice that held the whole room spellbound.

Miss Davis stammered, "Y-yes... this is Room 204."

"By order of the Grand Court of Wonder," the performer shouted, "we are searching for a very important person. A person whose imagination commands the dragons of the sky and the stars of the night! We seek... Princess Maya Lin!"

Every single head in the room snapped toward the back row.

Maya froze, her pencil dropping from her hand. Her face flushed bright red.

The performer marched down the aisle, bowed deeply until her hat almost touched the floor, and presented the golden scroll directly to Maya. Attached to the scroll was a heavy wax seal bearing the emblem of Miller Wonderlands, along with a bright, shining key made of solid brass.

"Princess Maya," the performer declared, "your royal presence is requested at the Grand Kingdom this Saturday. But a princess cannot celebrate alone!"

The performer turned back to the rest of the class, who were staring at Maya with absolute, unadulterated awe.

"By royal decree of Princess Maya," the performer announced, "every scholar in this room is hereby granted VIP Royal Access to the entire kingdom! Private transport shall pick you up at sunrise! Unlimited games, unlimited ice cream, and the flying dragons of the North sky await you all—courtesy of your classmate, Maya!"

The classroom exploded.

Children started screaming with joy, jumping up and down, hugging each other. Marcus dropped his eraser and stared at Maya like she had just turned into a superhero. Lily ran over to Maya's desk, her eyes wide with wonder.

"Maya!" Lily squealed. "You know the theme park people?! Are we really going on the dragon ride?!"

"Is it real, Maya?!" Marcus yelled, hopping on one foot. "Are there really flying dragons?!"

Maya looked down at the golden scroll in her small hands. Then she looked through the classroom window. Standing out in the hallway, wearing his simple dark suit and leaning quietly against the wall with a small smile on his face, was Robert Miller.

He caught her eye, gave her a subtle, elegant nod, and tipped his imaginary hat.
