Part 8: The Official Merger Agreement

Six months later, the Ashford mansion didn't just look like a home—it felt like a sanctuary.

The crystal chandeliers still sparkled over the marble foyer, but now they reflected genuine laughter, the patter of running feet, and the rich, comforting aroma of home-cooked meals drifting from the kitchen.

It was a Saturday morning, and the spring sunshine poured through the spotless living room windows.

Catherine sat at the center island of the newly redesigned kitchen, reviewing a tablet, but her work habits had fundamentally changed. Her laptop was closed by 5:00 PM every single day, and her weekends were strictly reserved for family bike rides, baking disasters, and blanket fort construction.

Across the kitchen, Marcus was flipping pancakes while Maya—now seven and growing like a weed—whisked eggs in a bright yellow bowl, singing along to a song playing on the radio.

The double doors swung open, and all five Ashford girls marched into the kitchen in a coordinated formation that immediately caught Catherine’s attention.

Sophia stepped forward as the spokesperson, holding a neatly folded piece of heavy cardstock paper with a serious, official expression on her face.

“Mom, Marcus,” Sophia announced, clearing her throat formally. “We, the undersigned daughters and official board members of the Ashford-Rivera household, have a proposal.”

Catherine raised an eyebrow, hiding a smile. “Oh? Is this a hostile takeover?”

“No,” Emma chimed in excitedly, unable to keep a straight face. “It’s a promotion!”

Sophia handed the paper to Catherine.

Catherine unfolded it. Written in neat, colorful crayon and marker was a formal contract: The Official Family Merger Agreement.

At the bottom, in bold letters, it read: We hereby request that Marcus Rivera officially marries our mom so he can live here forever and never leave.

Catherine stared at the paper, her throat instantly tightening with overwhelming emotion. She looked up, her blue eyes shining with unsheltered tears.

Before she could speak, Marcus walked over from the stove. He wiped his hands on a kitchen towel, knelt down beside Sophia, and looked at the paper.

“Well,” Marcus said with a wide, loving smile, “that is a legally binding document if I’ve ever seen one. But before we sign… I need to ask your mom a very important question first.”

Marcus stood up, walking slowly over to Catherine. The kitchen went completely silent as all seven pairs of eyes—five daughters and Maya—watched with bated breath.

Marcus reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, elegant velvet box.

Catherine’s breath hitched. Her hands flew to her mouth as tears spilled over her cheeks.

Marcus dropped smoothly to one knee right in front of her stool, looking up into her eyes with a love so pure, deep, and unwavering that it took her breath away.

“Catherine,” Marcus began, his voice steady and rich with emotion. “When I walked into this house six months ago, I thought I was just doing an emergency cleaning job. I didn't know I was walking into my destiny. You are the strongest, most brilliant, most fiercely loving woman I have ever known. You brought light into my world, and you gave my daughter and me a family when we needed it most. Will you marry me? Will you let us be a family forever?”

The girls held their collective breath. Lily squeezed her eyes shut and crossed her fingers.

Catherine didn't hesitate for a single second.

She slid off the stool, dropping right down to her knees onto the kitchen floor, throwing her arms around Marcus’s neck and burying her face in his shoulder.

“Yes!” Catherine sobbed happily against his ear. “Yes, a million times yes, Marcus!”

A massive cheer erupted in the kitchen. Lily jumped up and down clapping, the twins screamed with joy, Charlotte zoomed around them on her toy car cheering, and Sophia wiped a proud tear from her own eye while Maya hugged her dad around the neck.
