Chapter 7 - Spring in the Garden

Three months later, the bitter chill of winter had entirely vanished from Briar Ridge, replaced by the bright, vibrant warmth of late spring.

The rose garden behind the Vale estate, once neglected and shadowed by grief, was now in full bloom. Red, white, and yellow roses spilled over the stone pathways, filling the crisp morning air with a sweet, natural fragrance.

On the manicured lawn, six-year-old Noah Vale was running barefoot through the grass, laughing as he chased a golden retriever puppy. His cheeks were rosy, his step was strong and steady, and the medical monitor that had beeped ominously in his bedroom for three years was gone—replaced by the sound of birds singing in the oak trees.

Sitting on a white wrought-iron bench nearby, Adrian Vale watched his son with a cup of coffee in his hand. For the first time in years, the hardened lines around his eyes were relaxed. He looked like a father, not a warlord.

Footsteps approached along the garden path.

Sophia Bennett walked over, carrying a tray with a pitcher of fresh lemonade and two glasses. She wore a light summer dress, her expression serene and content.

"He's been running for twenty minutes straight," Sophia noted with a gentle smile, setting the tray on the table. "Dr. Harrison called this morning. The final blood work came back completely clean. No trace of the toxin remains."

Adrian set his coffee down and looked up at her. "That's thanks to you, Sophia. And to Ellie."

"Ellie just wanted to share her cookie," Sophia replied with a soft laugh.

Right on cue, little Ellie came running across the grass, clutching her cloth rabbit under one arm, with Noah trailing closely behind her.

"Mr. Adrian! Look what we found!" Ellie announced proudly, holding out an old, slightly rusted metal toy truck half-buried in the flowerbed.

Adrian crouched down, exactly as he had done on the night they first met, and inspected the truck with exaggerated seriousness.

"Well, detective," Adrian said, a rare, warm smile touching his lips. "I think that belongs right here." He placed it safely on the garden wall.

Ellie beamed, grabbed Noah's hand, and the two children ran off toward the hedge maze to hunt for imaginary dinosaurs.
