Chapter 8 - The Awakening

Three days later, the morning sun poured through the large double-paned windows of Metro General’s pediatric recovery suite, casting a warm, golden glow across the sterile white walls.
Eli Mercer sat propped up against a stack of fluffy pillows, a vibrant comic book resting on his lap, though his attention was entirely focused on the television screen playing a Saturday morning cartoon. A colorful get-well card signed by the entire emergency department staff sat on the bedside table next to a large basket of fruit and a stuffed golden retriever.
The door clicked open softly, and Tessa Mercer walked in.
She looked tired, dark circles still lingering beneath her eyes from her harrowing ordeal locked in the sub-basement utility storage where Marcus’s henchmen had stashed her before the plan unraveled, but her face was radiant with tears of overwhelming relief. She rushed to the bed and wrapped her arms around her son, burying her face in his shoulder.
“Mom, you’re squeezing too tight!” Eli protested with a small, happy laugh, hugging her back just as fiercely.
“I’m never letting go, Eli. Never,” Tessa whispered, kissing the top of his head over and over again.
Standing in the doorway with a gentle smile was Dr. Rowan Hale. She wore comfortable civilian clothes, her pregnant belly resting heavily beneath a soft knit sweater. Beside her stood Harrison Cole, looking remarkably composed in a clean shirt, though a small bandage remained visible on his right arm from his leap into the courtyard.
“How’s our favorite patient doing this morning?” Rowan asked, stepping into the room with a small plastic container of apple juice for Eli.
Eli looked up, his eyes wide with admiration. “Dr. Hale! The nurses said you saved me from the big machine.”
“We worked as a team, Eli,” Rowan corrected gently, sitting down in the chair beside the bed. “And I think you were the bravest person in this entire hospital.”
Tessa stood up, wiping a tear from her cheek, and walked over to Rowan, taking both of Rowan’s hands in her own. “I don't think I’ll ever be able to thank you enough, Rowan. You risked your life—and your baby’s safety—to save my son. The police told me everything. Marcus Vance is behind bars, facing federal indictment for embezzlement, kidnapping, and attempted murder. The hospital board has already initiated a full restructuring, and our department is finally safe.”
“We all did what we had to do, Tessa,” Rowan replied, squeezing her hand warmly. “The important thing is that you’re both together, and justice was served.”
Just then, a sharp, familiar twinge rippled across Rowan’s lower abdomen. She froze for a fraction of a second, her breath catching slightly as she pressed a hand against her belly.
Harrison noticed immediately, stepping closer with a concerned look. “Rowan? Are you okay? Should I call Dr. Vance upstairs?”
May you like
Rowan let out a soft, knowing laugh, shaking her head as a radiant smile spread across her face. She felt a sudden, unmistakable rush of warmth.
“No, Harrison,” Rowan said, her eyes sparkling with joy as she looked down at her glowing belly. “You don’t need to call Melissa. I think our little miracle worker has decided it’s finally time to make an entrance.”
