Chapter 3 - The Gathering of Allies

The next morning, I packed our bags again and checked out of the hotel. I couldn't stay hidden forever, nor did I want to run. Running made me look like the guilty party. If I wanted to protect Louisa and dismantle Elmer's web of lies, I needed protection, legal firepower, and above all, exposure.
First, I called Marcus Vance.
Marcus was not just any divorce lawyer; he was a shark known throughout the state for handling high-net-worth contentious separations, corporate embezzlement, and domestic fraud cases. We had gone to college together, and though we hadn't kept in close touch, I knew his reputation.
“Joanna? Wow, it’s been years,” Marcus’s deep voice boomed through the speaker as we sat in a quiet corner booth of an upscale downtown café. Louisa was happily coloring in a booklet across from us, oblivious to the legal storm swirling around her. “Though I wish the circumstances were happier. Tell me everything.”
I slid my tablet across the table and played the hidden camera footage, followed by the bank statement showing the unauthorized withdrawal. I also showed him the medical report from the urgent care clinic I had visited that morning, documenting the split lip Walter had given me, alongside photographs of Louisa’s shorn head.
Marcus’s expression hardened from friendly nostalgia to stone-cold professionalism. He pressed his fingertips together, watching the video a second time.
“This is gold,” Marcus said quietly. “And by gold, I mean a prison sentence for him and a civil nightmare for his parents. Elder abuse, child abuse, assault, domestic battery, and grand larceny. Your husband didn't just step out of line; he leaped right off a cliff.”
“I want full custody,” I said, my voice steady. “I want every cent of my assets back, and I want Walter and Lydia held accountable for what they did to my daughter.”
“You’ll get it,” Marcus smiled grimly, pulling a stack of official documents from his briefcase. “Step one is filing an emergency protective order. Step two is freezing all joint accounts before he can touch another dime. Step three... well, step three is where we turn his own family against him.”
“What do you mean?”

“Elmer thinks he's the smartest guy in the room,” Marcus explained, uncapping a sleek fountain pen. “He used his parents' obsession with control and status to execute this scam. But people like Walter and Lydia care about one thing above all else: their public image. If they realize Elmer used them to commit a crime that could bring public shame and ruin their precious family name, they won't protect him. They’ll throw him under the bus so fast it’ll make your head spin.”
A slow, knowing smile touched my lips. The trap was set. Now, we just needed to bait it.
