Part 10: Into the Light

The evening shift in the emergency department settled into a calm, steady rhythm as the autumn twilight painted the sky outside the trauma bay windows in shades of gold and violet.

I pinned Leo’s drawing right to the center of the nurses’ station bulletin board, right beneath the primary trauma schedule. Every time one of the residents or nurses walked past, they paused to look at it, a quiet reminder of why we put up with the chaos, the long hours, and the unimaginable heartbreak of our profession.

Marcus walked by with a fresh cup of black coffee, glancing up at the drawing before looking over at me with a warm, approving grin.

“Not a bad masterpiece of our own, is it, Sarah?” he asked softly.

I smiled, leaning back against the counter as I watched the sliding doors open to admit the next patient—a mild sprain, routine and manageable.

“No, Marcus,” I said, resting my hand comfortably near the bulletin board, feeling the steady pulse of life humming all around us. “Not bad at all.”

The ghosts of the past were finally laid to rest, replaced by the bright, unbroken future of a little boy who had finally stepped out of the darkness and back into the light.
