Chapter 6 - Whispers of the Past and Future

Months passed, turning the bitter winter of Long Island into a vibrant, blooming spring. The Moretti estate was no longer a fortress of silence; it was alive with the sound of running footsteps, chiming laughter, and the rich aroma of baking bread drifting from the massive stainless-steel kitchens.

Adrian’s transformation sent ripples through the New York underworld. Rival bosses whispered in smoke-filled backrooms, wondering if the ruthless, unyielding shark of the harbor had finally gone soft. They tested the waters—a delayed shipment here, a minor territorial encroachment there.

They expected the old Adrian Moretti: a swift, brutal retaliation that would paint the streets red.

Instead, they received a polite, chillingly precise phone call from Marcus Vance, offering a diplomatic resolution that favored Moretti Logistics while leaving just enough profit on the table to keep the rivals appeased. Adrian no longer ruled through fear alone; he ruled with calculated, unassailable authority. He had something to protect now, and men with something to lose were infinitely more dangerous than men who welcomed death.

On a warm Saturday afternoon in May, Hannah sat on the wide stone veranda overlooking the sparkling waters of the Sound. She was reviewing the estate’s monthly supply ledger, a cup of freshly brewed coffee resting on the table beside her.

Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path below.

Adrian walked up the stone steps, wearing a simple white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. His skin was tanned from the spring sun, and the severe, haunted look that had once defined his features was entirely gone, replaced by a quiet, grounded strength.

“You’re working too hard, Hannah,” Adrian said smoothly, pulling out a wrought-iron chair and sitting across from her.

“I’m just finishing up the payroll, Mr. Moretti,” Hannah smiled, closing the leather-bound ledger. “Besides, being busy is a habit I’m not sure I’ll ever fully break.”

“Call me Adrian,” he reminded her gently, a familiar refrain between them over the last few months.

Hannah blushed slightly, looking out toward the lawn where Ellie was currently engaged in an epic battle of tag with two of the estate’s security guards, who were deliberately letting her win. Rosie the rabbit was clutched firmly under Ellie’s arm as she sprinted across the green grass, her shrill, joyful shrieks carrying across the breeze.

“She’s growing up fast,” Adrian said quietly, his eyes following the little girl.

“She is,” Hannah sighed, a bittersweet note entering her voice. “Sometimes I look at her and I still remember that morning in Astoria—the overdue bills, the empty pantry, the terror of not having a backup pen. If you hadn’t given us this chance…”

“I didn't give you a chance, Hannah,” Adrian interrupted, his voice dropping into a deep, earnest register. “You gave me one. You and Ellie pulled me out of a grave I had dug for myself three years ago.”

Hannah turned her gaze back to him, meeting his steady, intense gray eyes. In that moment, the barrier between the powerful mafia boss and the ordinary housekeeper dissolved completely. There was only a man and a woman who had both survived the unthinkable, finding healing in the most unexpected of places.

“What happens next, Adrian?” Hannah whispered, the unspoken question hanging heavily in the spring air.

May you like

Adrian reached across the table, his warm, calloused fingers resting gently over the back of her hand.

“Whatever you want it to be,” he answered softly. “The gates are open, Hannah. But I hope you never want to leave.”
