Chapter 7 - The Recovery

The valley medical center in Seattle was quiet as dusk fell three days later.
Nathan stood in the private recovery suite, looking out the large window at the city lights. Behind him, the steady, rhythmic beep of a heart monitor provided a comforting soundtrack.
Sarah lay in the bed, her head bandaged, but her color had returned. The emergency surgery to relieve the pressure on her brain had been a success, and her hypothermia had been fully reversed.
Sitting in small cribs on either side of her bed were Owen and Ethan, both fully recovered, happily chewing on rubber teething rings and gurgling softly.
And sitting in a large armchair next to Sarah, her small feet wrapped in soft wool socks, was Lily. She was holding a warm cup of cocoa with both hands, watching her mother with vigilant, loving eyes.
The door pushed open quietly, and Dr. Aris Thorne, head of pediatrics, walked in with a warm smile.
"How are our patients doing tonight?" Dr. Thorne asked softly.
"They're doing amazingly well," Nathan said, turning from the window. "Lily’s frostbite was superficial—her toes are going to heal completely without any permanent damage. And the twins have gained half a pound each."
"It's a miracle," Thorne whispered, looking at Lily with deep respect. "A five-year-old walking two miles in a Category 3 blizzard carrying two infants... scientifically, she shouldn't have made it half a mile. That child has a heart made of titanium."
"She gets it from her mother," Nathan said softly.
Sarah stirred, her eyes slowly opening. She turned her head toward Nathan and held out a weak hand. Nathan walked over instantly, sitting on the edge of the bed and taking her small hand in his, wrapping both of his large palms around it.
"Nathan..." Sarah whispered softly.
"I'm right here, Sarah," Nathan said, his voice thick with emotion. "I'm not going anywhere."
"Did... did they catch him?"
"Marcus is in federal custody," Nathan assured her gently. "Chief Miller recovered your forged letters from Marcus’s old lockbox. The state prosecutor is charging him with attempted murder, felony child endangerment, kidnapping, and fraud. He will spend the rest of his life behind bars. He will never, ever hurt you or these children again."
Sarah let out a long, shuddering breath, a burden seven years heavy finally lifting from her narrow shoulders. Tears leaked from her eyes, but for the first time in nearly a decade, they were tears of pure relief.
"I tried to find you, Nathan," Sarah sobbed quietly. "I tried so hard... but he took everything. He told me you hated me..."
"Shh, no more," Nathan whispered, leaning down to kiss her forehead. "I was an idiot. My pride and my anger kept me from looking deeper. I failed you, Sarah. But I swear to you, for as long as I have breath in my body, I will make it right."
Lily climbed down from her armchair, padded softly over to the bed in her big wool socks, and slipped her hand into Nathan's pocket. She pulled out the silver bracelet he had kept with him every second since that terrible night.
"Look, Mommy," Lily said sweetly. "Uncle Nathan fixed it."
Nathan had taken the silver bracelet to a master jeweler in town the day before. The scratches were gone, polished away into smooth, mirror-like silver. But beneath the original inscription, Nathan had paid to have three new words added:
