Chapter 3 - Shadows Within the Walls

The figure stepped into the dim amber light of the hospital room. It was Marcus Vance, Spencer’s executive vice president and his closest confidant for over a decade. Marcus held a sleek silver briefcase in one hand, his face wearing an expression of polite, chilling detachment.

“It’s admirable how quickly you put the pieces together, Spencer,” Marcus said smoothly, his voice echoing quietly against the tiled floor. “Though, to be fair, you were always a bit too trusting of the people who kept your empire running while you hid behind your laboratory doors.”

Spencer moved instinctively, positioning himself between Marcus and the beds where Florence and Charlee rested. “Marcus. You embezzled the funds, you accessed my genetic samples, and you tried to have an innocent newborn killed.”

“Killed?” Marcus chuckled softly, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. “Let’s call it ‘redirection.’ Jocelyn Cooper became unmanageable. She threatened to go to the authorities when she realized our plans for the child didn't match her maternal fantasies. So, we arranged an accident for her. Unfortunately, her newborn slipped away before our cleaning crew could secure the package. Who would have guessed a homeless seven-year-old would play hero in the middle of a torrential downpour?”

Dr. Pamela Ortiz backed away in terror, her hand flying to her mouth. “You monster... you said you just wanted to help a grieving mother!”

“Science requires sacrifice, Pamela,” Marcus replied dismissively. He opened the silver briefcase, revealing a sleek laptop and a biometric scanner. “And corporate governance requires absolute stability. With your father gone, Spencer, and you declared sterile, the board was primed to vote me in as interim CEO. But then old man Warren’s hidden will surfaced, stipulating that a direct biological heir—or their legally recognized blood relative—holds veto power over all corporate restructuring.”

Marcus cast a cold glance toward the sofa where Charlee lay sleeping. “Which means the little girl holding your son is technically the keyholder to your entire fortune. And right now, we are going to sign over the proxy rights, Spencer. Or neither you, nor the brat, nor the old woman will leave this hospital alive.”

Heavy footsteps echoed from the hallway outside. Through the reinforced glass window of the hospital room, Spencer saw three burly security guards in dark suits take up positions blocking both exits.

Spencer didn't flinch. Instead, a dangerous, calculating calmness washed over him. He slowly reached into his suit jacket, not for a weapon, but to pull out his smartphone, tapping the screen twice.

“You think you’ve outmaneuvered me, Marcus?” Spencer’s voice was as cold as glacial ice. “You forgot one fundamental rule about Warren Enterprises: I never built a system I couldn't override remotely.”

Marcus frowned, tapping his own earpiece. “Cut the power to the floor!” he barked into his comms device.

Nothing happened. The hospital lights remained steady, and the hum of the medical equipment continued uninterrupted.

“Too late,” Spencer said, a faint smirk touching the corner of his lips. “The moment you stepped into this room and confessed to the conspiracy, your biometric signature triggered the fail-safe protocol. The entire board of directors, the federal securities commission, and Pinecrest Police Department are currently listening to every single word you just said.”

Marcus’s face drained of color. He lunged forward, slamming his hand onto the biometric scanner in the briefcase to trigger a lockdown, but the screen flashed a bright crimson warning: ACCESS DENIED. SYSTEM LOCKED BY CEO OVERRIDE.

From the corridor outside, the sharp sound of sirens pierced the night air, followed by the heavy boots of armed tactical officers storming the hallway.
