Part 2: The Buried Truth

The room stayed frozen after Dr. Richard Sterling’s words.

Clara felt as if the air had been pulled out of her lungs.
“My… grandson?” she repeated, barely audible. “What are you talking about?”

Dr. Sterling lowered himself into the chair beside her bed, suddenly looking less like a doctor and more like a man crushed by years of silence.

“Logan… is my son,” he said hoarsely. “And what I’m about to tell you is something I should have confessed long before you ever met him.”

Clara’s fingers tightened around the edge of the blanket. “Where is he? Why did he leave when I told him I was pregnant?”

The doctor closed his eyes for a moment, as if gathering the strength to reopen a wound.

“Because seven months ago,” he said, “Logan received a letter. Not from you… but from someone pretending to be you.”

Clara frowned. “That’s impossible. I never—”

“I know,” he interrupted gently. “But the letter said the baby wasn’t his. It said you were going to ‘trap him into a life he didn’t choose.’ And it came with forged medical notes… even a fake DNA report.”

The color drained from Clara’s face.

“That’s why he left,” Dr. Sterling continued, voice shaking. “He thought he was protecting himself from betrayal… not realizing he was the one being manipulated.”

The monitors beside Clara beeped softly as her heart raced.

“Who would do that?” she whispered.

Dr. Sterling hesitated.

Then, quietly: “Someone who never wanted Logan to have a family outside of our control.”

Clara stared at him, slowly understanding the weight of what he was implying.

“You mean… your family?”

The doctor didn’t answer immediately.

But his silence was an answer.

Before Clara could speak again, a nurse rushed in holding a phone.

“Doctor Sterling,” she said urgently. “There’s someone downstairs. A man—he says he needs to see the baby. He says his name is Logan.”

Clara’s breath caught.

And for the first time since labor began, her heart didn’t feel like it was breaking.

It felt like it was about to explode.
