Chapter 4 - A Guardian's Promise

The next morning, the sun rose over the hospital, casting a warm, golden light through the windows. Camila had finally fallen asleep, curled up in a large armchair next to the twins' incubators, wrapped in a fluffy pink hospital blanket.

Laura Bennett sat at the nurse's station, nursing a lukewarm cup of coffee. She had been on the phone for hours, coordinating with the police, child protective services, and the legal department.

She was determined to protect this family.

"Laura," Nurse Margaret said, walking over with a clipboard. "The police just finished searching Anna’s trailer. It’s bad. The landlord had cut off the electricity two days ago because the bill wasn't paid. That's why Anna’s insulin spoiled in the refrigerator. She was trying to ration her remaining doses, which is what triggered the coma."

Laura squeezed her coffee cup, her knuckles turning white. "And where was Carmen during all of this? She lives in a five-bedroom mansion just three miles away. She drives a car that costs more than Anna’s trailer."

"The police interviewed some neighbors," Margaret replied, shaking her head in disgust. "Apparently, Carmen cut Anna off financially a year ago when Anna refused to give her custody of Camila. Carmen wanted to raise Camila as her own perfect 'project' and discard Anna. When Anna said no, Carmen tried to starve her out."

"It's sick," Laura muttered. "She wanted to break Anna so she could swoop in and play the savior. But she didn't expect Anna to get so sick, so fast. And she didn't expect Camila to be so brave."

Just then, a nurse from the intensive care unit ran down the hallway. "Laura! Margaret! Anna is starting to stir. She's regaining consciousness."

Laura immediately stood up and went to wake Camila. "Hey, sweetheart. Wake up. Your mommy is calling for you."

Camila blinked her eyes open, instantly alert. "Mommy?"

Within seconds, Camila was running down the hallway, her small bare feet tapping against the linoleum floor, with Laura and Margaret close behind. They entered the ICU room just as Anna’s eyes fluttered open.

Anna squinted against the bright hospital lights. She groaned softly, her hand reaching instinctively toward her stomach. "My... my babies..." she whispered, her voice barely a dry croak. "Where are my babies?"

"Mommy!" Camila cried, throwing herself toward the bed. She stopped herself just before colliding with the mattress, remembering all the wires, and instead gently grabbed her mother's pale hand. "Mommy, I'm here! Diego and Sophie are here too! They're safe!"

Anna’s head turned slowly toward her daughter. Tears instantly welled in her eyes, spilling down her hollow cheeks. "Camila... oh baby... I'm so sorry. I couldn't get up..."

"You don't have to say sorry, Mommy," Camila sobbed, kissing her mother's hand. "I got them. I put them in the shopping cart and I pushed them. The nurses and doctors made them warm. They're eating now."

Anna looked up at Laura and Margaret, her eyes pleading. "Are they... are they really okay?"

"They are doing wonderfully, Anna," Margaret said, stepping forward with a warm smile. "They are in the PICU right now, getting plenty of milk and warmth. They are going to make a full recovery. And your daughter is a hero. She saved their lives."

Anna closed her eyes, a sob tearing through her chest. "Thank God... thank God."

But as the initial relief washed over her, a look of panic suddenly crossed Anna’s face. She gripped Camila's hand tighter. "My mother... Carmen. She... she called me back before I passed out. She told me she wasn't coming. She said I was on my own. Did she... did she try to take them?"

Laura stepped forward, her voice calm but filled with an ironclad reassurance. "Anna, my name is Laura Bennett. I am the social worker assigned to your case. I want you to listen to me very carefully: your mother is never going to hurt you or your children again."

"She has money," Anna whispered, her voice trembling with a lifetime of fear. "She has influence. She’ll try to prove I'm unfit because we're poor... because I got sick..."

May you like

"She can try," Laura said, a fierce smile playing on her lips. "But we have her on tape refusing to help her dying daughter and starving grandchildren. We have the police report. We have the testimony of the entire emergency room staff. I am filing a permanent restraining order against her on your behalf today. She will never be allowed within five hundred feet of any of you. And as for your living situation—we are going to help you. You are not alone anymore."

Anna looked at Laura, then at Margaret, and finally down at Camila, who was smiling through her tears. For the first time in years, the crushing weight of isolation began to lift from Anna’s shoulders.
