Chapter 9 - The Formal Adoption

The summer of the following year brought the culmination of their long legal journey: the final adoption hearing.
Rowan was now nearly two years old—a joyful, energetic toddler with curly dark hair and infectious laughter who spent his days chasing the family Golden Retriever around the yard and calling Nathan "Daddy."
Maisie was almost nine, a brilliant, compassionate young girl who excelled in school, played the cello, and was fiercely protective of her younger brother, though now out of sisterly love rather than survival desperate need.
The adoption ceremony was held not in a sterile court building, but in a private judicial chamber decorated with yellow flowers, arranged by Judge Evelyn Carter herself, who had personally requested to oversee the finalization.
Nathan, Hannah, Maisie, and Rowan stood before the judge’s desk. Clara, Margaret Vance, and Dr. Rostova sat in the front row as witnesses, smiling warmly.
Judge Carter looked over the massive stack of reports, psychological clearances, home evaluations, and legal documents accumulated over twenty-four months.
“In my forty years on the bench,” Judge Carter said, her voice filled with deep emotion, “I have overseen thousands of custody cases. Most are defined by legal battles and tragic compromises. But this case... this case began in a cardboard box on a freezing night in Westfield Square.”
She looked at Nathan, then at Hannah, and finally at the two children.
“Nathan Fisher, you stepped out of a life of luxury and isolation to answer a child’s plea for help. You did not just offer charity; you offered your heart, your home, and your life. And Hannah, you joined this family and provided the gentle grace needed to complete their healing.”
Judge Carter signed the final adoption decree with a flourish of her fountain pen and stamped it with the gold seal of the State of New York.
“By the power vested in me, I hereby declare Rowan and Maisie to be the legal, permanent children of Nathan and Hannah Fisher. Their names are officially registered as Maisie Reed Fisher and Rowan Daniel Fisher.”
She slammed her gavel down one last time—not to end a conflict, but to cement a family.

“Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Fisher. You are officially forever family.”
Maisie jumped up and hugged Nathan around the waist, while Hannah lifted little Rowan into her arms, kissing his cheek as he giggled. The room erupted in applause, tears, and joyous celebration.
