Chapter 6 - The Masks Fall Off

I picked up the Manila folder and threw it onto the center of the dining table. The heavy paper slapped against the polished wood with a sharp crack that echoed through the silent house.
Mark flinched. My mother merely raised an eyebrow, her expression shifting from condescension to mild annoyance.
"What is this theatrical nonsense, David?" she demanded, crossing her arms. "If this is another emotional outburst about your wife's feelings, I suggest you save it. We are running a multi-million dollar enterprise, not a therapy session."
"Open the folder, Mark," I said, ignoring my mother entirely.
Mark hesitated, looking at our mother for permission.
"Open it," I repeated, my tone dropping an octave.
Mark reached out with a trembling hand and pulled open the cover. The first document visible was a color copy of the forged property transfer deed, complete with a forensic analysis report highlighting the falsified signature. Beneath it were bank statements from the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, detailing every transaction Mark had made over the last three years.
As Mark flipped through the pages, the color drained completely from his face. His mouth opened, but no sound came out.
"What is that?" my mother snapped, stepping forward and snatching the papers from Mark’s hands.
She scanned the documents rapidly. For a brief second, I caught a glimpse of genuine shock in her eyes, but it was quickly replaced by a cold, calculating fury. She didn't look remorseful; she looked enraged that her authority was being challenged.
"Where did you get these?" she hissed, staring at me with dark, venomous eyes. "Did you break into the corporate office? Did you hire someone to steal confidential company records?"
"It doesn't matter how I got them," I replied calmly, leaning back against the wall. "What matters is what they prove. You forged my signature to steal my inheritance. You siphoned over four million dollars from the family business to pay off Mark's gambling debts. And you systematically tormented my wife for six years to keep me too distracted to notice what you were doing."
My mother let out a sharp, bitter laugh. "Tormented her? She is an outsider! She came from nothing, David! She was dragging down this family’s reputation from the moment you brought her home. Everything I did, I did to preserve the legacy your father built!"
"My father left the majority share of the company to me and Evelyn," I retorted, stepping forward until I was standing inches from her face. "I listened to the audio recording, Mother. Dad knew who you were. He knew Mark was incompetent. He trusted me to protect the family, and he trusted Evelyn to keep me grounded. You stole his legacy the moment he was buried."
My mother gasped, stepping back as if she had been slapped. "You... you listened to the recordings?"
"Every single one," I said. "Clara gave me everything."
Mark let out a choked sound. "Clara? Clara gave you the files?"
"Clara realized what you two were," Evelyn spoke up, her voice ringing clear and strong across the room. "She realized that you would burn down everyone around you just to save yourselves. You took away my mother's chance at treatment five years ago out of pure malice. You stomped on her memory last week. But you will never, ever touch this family again."
My mother’s composure completely shattered. Her face twisted into a mask of pure rage. She raised her hand, aiming a sharp slap directly at Evelyn’s face—just as she had done so many times before to exert control.
Before her hand could make contact, I caught her wrist in mid-air.

My grip was firm, immovable. My mother stared at me in absolute disbelief, her breathing heavy and ragged.
"Don't you ever lay a hand on my wife again," I said softly, my voice laced with steel. "You are done."
