Chapter 6 - The Syndicate's Terms

The paper on my bed felt heavier than lead. My fingers trembled as I unfolded it, the harsh fluorescent light of the hospital room glaring against the ink.

“I, Luke Mercer, pledge the surrender of one infant child, June Mercer, as collateral for the principal loan of seventy-five thousand dollars, payable to Meridian Financial Holdings within forty-eight hours. Failure to deliver results in the immediate forfeiture of collateral asset #2: Eli Mercer.”

The words blurred behind a fresh wave of blinding tears. I looked up at Marcus, my chest heaving with a suffocating mix of rage and terror.

“Meridian Financial?” I choked out. “That’s a front. That’s loan shark money—organized crime. Luke gambled away our savings?”

“Worse,” Marcus said quietly, pulling up a chair and sitting down heavily beside Eli, resting a comforting hand on his nephew’s shoulder. “He was borrowing to cover mounting debts from illegal sports betting. When the syndicate came due last week, they threatened to break his legs. Then they found out you were pregnant. They gave him an ultimatum: hand over the newborn for their clients overseas, or they’d take Eli off the school playground as a message.”

Eli gasped, pulling back against the pillows. “They were going to take me?”

“They’re monsters, bud,” Marcus said, his voice thick with emotion. “Your dad panicked. He agreed to the swap with Clara’s baby because he thought he could trick the syndicate into taking a random infant while he hid June safely underground, buying time for the police to step in. But he miscalculated. The syndicate’s enforcers were watching the hospital entrances the entire time.”

Sergeant Miller stepped forward, his expression grave. “If Luke hid June in the old boiler room beneath the foundation, the syndicate's local thugs might already know where she is. They’ve been tracking his car since last night.”

“Then what are we waiting for?” I shouted, throwing off the hospital blanket and swinging my legs over the side of the bed. The sharp, agonizing tear of my C-section stitches flared up instantly, sending a wave of nausea through my body. I doubled over, gasping for air as the room tilted.

“Sarah, stop! You’ll hemorrhage!” Marcus cried out, rushing forward to push me gently back against the pillows.

“My daughter is down in a freezing concrete vault while loan sharks are looking for her!” I screamed, tears streaming down my face. “Let me go!”

“You’re not going anywhere in your condition,” Sergeant Miller intervened firmly, though his eyes softened with empathy. “Matrix and tactical teams are already mobilizing to secure the sub-basement levels of this hospital. We received an anonymous tip five minutes ago that an armed individual was spotted breaching the old maintenance stairwell.”

Eli grabbed my hand, his small fingers ice-cold. “Mom, please stay here. Let the police get June.”

Before I could answer, the hospital’s emergency alarm began to wail—a shrill, rhythmic klaxon accompanied by an automated overhead announcement:

“Facility lockdown in effect. All personnel shelter in place. Security breach reported in Sub-Level 3.”

On the security monitor by the door, the live feed from the sub-basement stairwell flickered. The camera showed two men in dark tactical jackets kicking open the heavy reinforced door leading to the old boiler room, flashlights cutting through the thick clouds of dust.

They weren't hospital staff. And they weren't police officers.

They were looking for June.
