Chapter 10 - The Horizon of Forever

The sun dipped low into the western horizon, setting the Pacific Ocean ablaze with ribbons of liquid amber, deep magenta, and twilight blue.
We sat together on the weathered wooden porch of our farmhouse—Maya, the girls, and I—wrapped in cozy flannel blankets as the evening chill rolled in off the water. The golden retriever rested its heavy chin contentedly across my bare feet.
There were no sirens echoing in the distance. No flashing red and blue lights reflecting off sterile walls. No cold, demanding voices barking instructions about posture and aesthetics.
There was only the steady, rhythmic crash of the waves against the shore, the gentle rustle of the wind through the pine trees, and the sound of breathing—soft, even, and completely safe.
My daughter leaned her head against my shoulder, her fingers absently tracing the hem of the blue blanket she had carried with her from that terrible night.
"Mom?" she whispered into the gathering dusk.
"I'm right here, sweetheart," I answered softly, wrapping my arm tighter around her.
"I love our life."

I looked out past the porch, past the wild lavender garden and the sloping cliffs, out toward the endless expanse of the ocean where the horizon stretched infinitely into the dark, glittering night. The past was a shipwreck far beneath the waves, broken and unreachable, while the future stretched wide and bright before us.
"Me too, my love," I whispered, kissing the top of her head as the stars began to ignite one by one across the vast, welcoming sky. "Me too."
