Chapter 5 - The Unraveling of the Mitchells

Two weeks into the separation, the fractures in the Mitchell family began to widen into chasms. Without my administrative coordination and financial buffering, Michael’s carefully curated life began to implode.

I received a frantic email from Michael’s brother, David—Tyler’s father. David lived two states away, working odd jobs and largely avoiding his responsibilities as a parent.

“Emily, what is going on? Michael says you kicked Mom and Tyler out? Tyler is supposed to be in school there. I can’t take him back right now, my apartment doesn't allow kids. You can’t just abandon a teenager because of a family fight.”

I replied to David with a single, concise sentence:

“David, Tyler is currently living with Michael and Sarah. If you are concerned about your son’s stability, I suggest you look into why his grandmother is facing criminal charges for child abuse. Do not contact me again.”

The truth was, without my income flowing into the joint account, Michael was suddenly forced to bear the full weight of his family's dependency. Sarah’s upcoming gallbladder surgery was no longer covered by my premium plan, meaning they were looking at thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket costs or a lengthy delay in a public clinic. Tyler’s private tutoring, his sports fees, and even the grocery bills for a household that consumed food like a small army were hitting Michael’s bank account all at once.

One afternoon, my mother called me. She lived in Vermont, a quiet woman who had always stayed out of my marital issues but had never liked Sarah.

"Emily, darling," she said, her voice filled with a mixture of pride and concern. "Michael’s aunt called me today. Apparently, Sarah is telling everyone in the family that you are an abusive, unhinged woman who is keeping Olivia hostage in a warehouse."

"Let them talk, Mom. The court date is in three weeks."

"Oh, I know, sweetie. But that’s not why I called. Aunt Brenda actually called to warn us. She said Michael is trying to get a forensic accountant to look into Earthy Rituals. He’s claiming that since the business was expanded during the marriage, he’s entitled to half of it. He wants to force a sale of your workshop to pay for his mother’s legal fees and medical bills."

A cold spike of adrenaline shot through me. My business was my baby. It was the physical manifestation of my independence, built on sixteen-hour days, raw fingers, and endless trade shows. The thought of Michael’s greedy hands reaching into my formulation room made my stomach turn.

I called Clara immediately.

"He can try," Clara said, her voice a soothing balm of pure experience. "But in this state, because your business was established as an LLC prior to the marriage, and because you kept your business accounts strictly segregated, it’s considered non-marital property. The only thing he could claim is the appreciation of value during the marriage, but we have a massive counter-claim: the thousands of dollars of your business revenue that you poured into supporting his non-dependent relatives and his mother’s lifestyle. We have the receipts, Emily. If he wants a financial war, he’s going to end up owing you a massive sum in retroactive support."

"Let’s make sure he knows that," I said. "Send his attorney the preliminary accounting of every dollar I spent on Tyler and Sarah over the last four years."
